“Your skills will atrophy.”
Hacker Valley Media
Cybersecurity storytelling through podcasts, videos, and more.
“Your skills will atrophy.”?
Those were the words a friend and mentor had for Chris and Ron when they shared their decision to let go of thriving cybersecurity careers for full-time content creation.
That mentor was right. Cybersecurity skills tend to have a short shelf-life given the fast and dynamic growth of the cyber community. Sometimes we need to let go of one skill set to make room for another.
Chris and Ron had to make room for the next chapter.
It was time to immerse themselves in content creation in order to build Hacker Valley into the company it is today. Our mission and vision are to empower, educate, and entertain the cyber community through storytelling.
We’ve created this newsletter to document our exploration of the human element in cyber. We’ll share our adventures and lessons along the way.
This is where you get to peek behind the curtain.
This is Hacker Valley: Off the Record.

Treat Others The Way You Want To Be Treated
That’s the Golden Rule. But is that the best way to operate as a leader in cyber?
A while back Chris relied on the Golden Rule when he was Director of Security at a fast-growing FinTech company. He lead the team the same way he would want to be treated - with plenty of space to do their best work. He thought it was going well, until a fateful 1:1.
“I don’t feel supported by you” shared one of his team members. The words cut through Chris like a sharp blade. This is the kind of feedback that no leader wants to hear, but that they NEED to hear. This team member was brave and Chris had clearly cultivated trust for them to share such candid input.
The Golden Rule had failed. What now?
With deeper discussion, it became clear that this team member wanted more structure and touchpoints to do their best work. This brings us to the Platinum Rule: Treat others how THEY want to be treated.
This is a mindset shift that prioritizes getting to know your individual team members on a deeper level. It’s an iterative process. Often folks realize what they need once they experience a lack thereof. We can seize these uncomfortable moments to refine our self-awareness, communication, and team operations to create a better environment for everyone.
Chris learned a powerful lesson that day, one that’s stuck with him.
What do you think - do these rules apply to leadership? Let us know in the comments!

2 年Awesome article and you are spot on. The less you utilize any of your technical skills the more they atrophy. I think of technical ability a lot like trying to learn a language. If you don't use it you lose it.
