Your #SheridanLife Update: June 2024
June was an amazing month for Sheridan students, full of empowerment and celebration. Our community came together for Sheridan Pride, but the excitement didn’t stop there. SSU launched our first Book Nook at the HMC Student Centre, approved a Travel Bursary for four Game Design grads to share their capstone project at the Games For Change Festival, and attended the Canadian Organization of Campus Activities Conference in Windsor. Together, our team gained new skills and insight that will help us enhance the student experience here at Sheridan.
Curious what else the SSU got up to this month? Take a look:
Sheridan Student Union Board of Directors
We are proud to see the approval of our (CASA) Canadian Alliance of Student Association membership by our Board of Directors. CASA is a national voice for Canada’s post-secondary students. The Board of Director decision has allowed SSU to strengthen our advocacy efforts at a Federal level to address the needs of our student community. We look forward to seeing the impact this approval will make this upcoming year.
The Board, in partnership with Sheridan Edge and the SSU, held the InnocaS.E, a case study competition where students were given a real-life student problem to solve through their innovative and creative ideas. The case study offered students the chance to explore one of these three core challenges faced by students:
With?80?students in attendance and Faculty and Sheridan Alumni as judges, this was a successful in-person event, and we look forward to continuing to empower student voices and feedback to create meaningful change and professional development opportunities.
Innoca.SE Competition offered Sheridan Students a great opportunity to get creative, problem-solve and share their ideas on how to shape the Sheridan Life. If you have more ideas throughout the year, stop by the next SSU Board Meeting to share your feedback. Learn more about the SSU Board of Directors.
Sheridan Student Union Executive Team
This month, our Vice Presidents worked with fellow students to continue the legacy of the Building Positive Spaces Kits. Leia, your VP of International Affairs, spoke on behalf of the SSU at the Pride Flag Raising Event to kick off the Sheridan Pride Celebrations and Ritz and Cat, with the support of fellow students, packaged new Kits for faculty, staff and students to enjoy!
Your SSU Vice Presidents and student leaders came together to assemble our Building Positive Space (BPS)?Kits and continue the legacy of increasing access to 2SLGBTQIA+ resources and supports. In addition to supporting Sheridan Pride celebrations, here are a few more highlights from the Exec Team:
Sheridan Student Union Services
We had a successful SSU Community Fair with our friends from Student Affairs to showcase many community organizations and resources that support our students. A special shoutout to Matthew and Juan from HMC who made some super fun staff training videos for new customer service hires - we thank them for their time, effort and creativity!
Sheridan Student Union Events
June included another successful “Take a Trip Thursday” event for the SSU, taking our students to Toronto Island! The rain held off for us and we were able to have a wonderful and warm day in the sun at the Islands. Our 2nd Annual Pride Community Fair happened on June 5th! We had a great turnout once again with over 200 attendees. This year’s Pride Community Fair included our lovely community vendors, outdoor games, live performances, and an ice cream cart! This event does well every year and is really becoming a staple summer event on our calendar!

Our Student Life Leads (SLL) are excited to do some pop-up events in the hallways to interact with our Summer students and get to know them better! We like to use our hallway engagements as a way to entertain and get great feedback so we can continue to provide events that students want. Our SLL team has been working hard to plan the upcoming Welcome Week, as well as more events well into the 2024/25 year. We want to recognize their hard work this past semester and we look forward to bringing their ideas to life for our Sheridan Students!
Sheridan Student Union Clubs
Our club coordinators hosted their first club executive meetings of the year to let club executives know all about what their role entails for the year. This month, our clubs hosted 7 events and we welcomed 3 new clubs to our community. Let's give a warm welcome to the new clubs starting up in June:

Recent Sheridan Game Design Grads Win Games For Change Award
Congratulations to Sheridan College Game Design grads Dawson Peloquin, Humberto B., Colin Billiau, Joel Bergen, Adam Pacheco, and John Hampson, whose capstone project - Stop and Breathe - was awarded Best Student Project at the Games for Change Festival! Here’s the premise of the game: “After an anxiety attack,?Ace finds themselves trapped in their own mind!? With the help of Zen, Ace must learn how to breathe, solve puzzles, and colour the way forward!”
Although designing the project itself was a collaborative effort among a large group of students and faculty, the SSU happily approved the Travel Bursary needed to provide four students the opportunity to attend the festival and showcase their idea. The two-day event brought together game developers and immersive creators from all around the world to celebrate and share the impact games can have on the world. By teaching folks the impact that breathing techniques have to help overcome anxiety, this project was able to combine gaming, wellness, and innovation.
The Club Connection: Dawson (Daws) Peloquin, one of the recent grads involved in this project, was also an exec of the Women and Queer Folk in Games Club and the entire group are members of the Game Design Society at Sheridan! If you’re looking for a way to connect with fellow Game Design students, visit Clubs Corner to learn more.
Sheridan Student Union Food Services
Summer may be our quieter season Our Food Services team, but there's still plenty to enjoy! Davis Bar Bites has been doing well and has seen incremental improvement in sales (switching the day from Thursday to Friday).
A new feature on the menu is One shot Ice cream (doing well at both campuses) also new on the menu is the Cheesecake stick (available in Skor's, Reese's, Key Lime & Belgium Choc)! Don’t forget to get your ice cream fix while the weather’s still hot.
We're proud of all the accomplishments achieved in June and the continuous efforts to create an inclusive and vibrant community at Sheridan. Stay tuned for more exciting news and events in the coming months.
