Are Your SEO Efforts Paying Off?

Wondering if your SEO strategies are actually working? You're not alone. Many businesses invest in SEO without a clear way to measure success. If you're curious about how to tell if your efforts are paying off, I’ve got you covered. Here's a video where I break it down:

For a deeper dive, check out this episode of Google’s Search Off the Record podcast, featuring Erika Varangouli from Riverside.fm . She shares valuable insights into evaluating SEO success , and it’s a great reminder that whether you're managing SEO in-house or working with an agency, regularly assessing your performance is crucial:

Key Metrics to Gauge Your SEO Successnbsp;

The first metric most people think of when evaluating SEO is organic search traffic. Tools like Google Search Console make it easy to track this data. If you’re seeing consistent growth in organic traffic year-over-year, you’re on the right track. However, SEO success goes beyond traffic alone. Here are some other key metrics you should keep an eye on:

  1. Keyword Rankings: Are the keywords you’re targeting climbing up the rankings? While this shouldn’t be your sole focus, improved keyword rankings often indicate that your SEO is moving in the right direction.
  2. Bounce Rate: A high bounce rate could signal that users aren’t finding what they’re looking for on your site. This can be a red flag that your SEO is driving the wrong traffic or that your content isn’t engaging enough.
  3. Click-Through Rate (CTR): If your site appears in search results but isn’t getting clicks, your meta descriptions or title tags might need adjusting. Improving CTR can significantly impact overall performance.
  4. Conversion Rate: Traffic is great, but it means little if it doesn’t convert. Whether you're tracking form submissions, sales, or other goals, conversions are the ultimate sign that your SEO is working.
  5. Time on Page: If users are spending more time engaging with your content, it’s a good sign that your SEO is targeting the right audience and delivering what they need.?

What to Do If Your SEO Isn’t Delivering Resultsnbsp;

If you're not seeing improvements in these areas, it may be time to re-evaluate your SEO strategy . Consider asking yourself:

  • Are the keywords you’re targeting relevant to your audience?
  • Is your content providing real value?
  • Is your website optimized for user experience and speed?
  • Are there any technical issues, like broken links or slow load times, hindering performance?

Sometimes the problem lies in the approach, and other times, it’s the agency you're working with. If your SEO partner isn’t asking the right questions—or if you're handling SEO yourself and feeling stuck—it might be time to seek help.?

At Boulder SEO Marketing (BSM), we always start with an in-depth questionnaire to assess whether we're the right fit for a client. If your current agency hasn’t done something similar, they may not have all the information needed to craft an effective strategy.

Evaluating your SEO success isn't a one-time task. It's something you should revisit regularly. SEO is an evolving process, and what worked last year might not be as effective today. So, don’t be afraid to tweak your approach, or even switch things up entirely, to keep up with the ever-changing digital landscape.

Nice writeup. Extremely helpful. This comment is more of an opinion / question and I would defer to experts like Chris (or Stan, Emmanuel, Suparno in my neck of the woods) to weigh in. I guess the objective of money & efforts spent on SEO is additional revenue resulting from SEO-driven conversion. But is there a higher rate of conversion as a result of SEO? If the rate of conversion was minimal earlier, then higher visibility with SEO would not make much of a difference, right? An underlying assumption, often untested, is that the business knows the value of its offerings to the audience it is attempting to reach. That is often not the case. For example, I have heard / read restaurateurs say "anyone who is hungry" are their idea customers. I would say they need to better understand what they are offering and who is it relevant for.
