Ruvna A Real-Time Student Locator During Emergencies

I recently connected with the developers of Ruvna through social media after their CFO Marshall Singer read one of my blogs. Marshall asked if I had time to look at a service they provide to K-12 schools. Since I am always looking for new technologies, services, and products to improve student safety I was intrigued and agreed to the demo.

The demo took 15 minutes; I liked what I saw and set up a follow-up call with CEO Joey Nutinsky. After a couple of minutes, it was evident that the guys from Ruvna were passionate about their project and bringing it to market.

So why do three guys start a company geared towards helping k-12 schools during an emergency? It's simple.  As Joey put it "If you notice a problem in the world that you want to solve, do whatever it takes to get it done."

Interview

YSA:     So Joey, as you know I have spoken to Marshall (Ruvna's) co-founder and CFO on several occasions, and I am very impressed with what you guys are doing.  But how did you guys come up with the idea to build a mustering system to account for students in the event of an emergency?

Joey: It’s an interesting story! I, along with our CTO Jack Ruppel, have been programming since middle school. Ruvna actually began as a school project aimed at helping the principals keep better track of the student body. Quickly, we realized that schools faced some unique challenges during emergencies (namely identifying which students require attention), and Ruvna was born.

YSA:     How does Ruvna work? What separates Ruvna from the competition?

Joey: Ruvna is a simple solution to a huge problem. During an emergency or drill, teachers only have to check-off the students they have in Ruvna. We use that information to immediately show administrators and law enforcement all of the students that aren’t safe with a teacher. Our competition sets out to solve other problems, facing other industries (not just schools), during emergencies. Many schools find that their needs are too unique to use a tool that wasn’t developed specifically for them.

YSA:     Other than emergencies, how can administrators use Ruvna?

Joey: Ruvna is a fantastic way for schools to speed up their mandatory monthly fire drills. Running a school costs thousands and thousands of dollars an hour, and schools should not be using more time than they need during these drills. Ruvna is a great way for schools to turn 40-minute fire drills into 15-minute drills.

YSA:     What obstacles (challenges) has Ruvna faced as a startup?

Joey: Sales in the education industry are quite challenging. We have this amazing product that schools have shown a huge amount of desire for, but we’re still figuring out the best way to start meaningful conversations with schools. Once that conversation is started, schools love what we have.

YSA:      Ruvna's target market is K-12 schools, but why not other markets, industries or businesses might benefit from using Ruvna?

Joey: Schools have incredibly specific needs, particularly when it comes to emergencies. Every single feature we have is there to solve the problems facing schools during their scariest situations. Our customers can trust that we have only their needs in mind when we are developing new features.

YSA:     Looking into your crystal ball, what does the future hold for Ruvna?

Joey: We have put a huge amount of time into developing a spectacular product. Now, it's time to introduce Ruvna into the world. We’re looking for schools right now to get on the Ruvna platform. Since this is Ruvna’s introductory year, we are offering some truly exciting discounts to help schools afford our important software and including money-back guarantees.

YSA:     What advice would you give future entrepreneurs looking to bring their idea to life?

Joey:    Never give up! If you notice a problem in the world that you want to solve, do whatever it takes to get it done. I always tell the team that there are a million reasons our company could fail, but lack of effort from us simply will not be one of them.
