Give etymology

The word "give" has its origins in Old English, where it was spelled giefan or gifan.

This Old English term comes from the Proto-Germanic word geban, which is also the ancestor of similar words in other Germanic languages, such as Old Norse gefa, Dutch geven, and German geben.

These terms all stem from the Proto-Indo-European root ghebh-, meaning "to hold" or "to grasp."

Over time, this root evolved to encompass the idea of transferring something to another person, which is how "give" came to be associated with the act of offering or bestowing something.
