Your Safety Record Speaks for Your Actions Every Day

In my twenties, I felt comfortable in my life, satisfied with my career, and the idea that I could be disabled by an accident of any kind seemed as distant as anything could be. That was true even when I was employed as a federal inspector and looking for potential hazards and safety violations on the job.

However, all of that changed in a moment when I was almost killed in the largest grain elevator explosion in Texas history. All those days, weeks and months of zero incidents on my watch suddenly “blew up” in my face as the result of someone else’s carelessness. The worker responsible for the explosion had been on the job for over 40 years. Throughout his career, he had never had any dangerous incidents, and many of his co-workers respected and trusted his seniority.
