IS YOUR RUNNING IN A SLUMP?

I've previously mentioned the euphoric feeling that is known as ‘Runners High’. That amazing sense of peace and happiness that typically comes from more miles (or exercise) and the release of endorphins. On the opposite spectrum to that is the ‘running slump’. That dreaded loss of motivation that affects mental and physical stamina. Running can quickly flip from a fun activity to a full-blown problem!

What is a running slump?

Dips in motivation are common for new and old runners alike. However it’s key to be able to spot the difference between a slump and just a bad day. A slump lasts, a bad day doesn’t!

There are numerous external forces that can result in running slumps. These can include:

-Continuous bad weather.

-Injury

-Personal stress

-Boredom

-Lack of focus

-Lack of progression

How to get out of a running slump:

1. Change Things Around:

If you are feeling down trodden by your usual pace, scenery, or running style, it’s time to try something new. Varying run types will stimulate muscular growth and increase speed and endurance. Try adding intervals to your routine and set goals around them.

2. Reset Yourself In An Active Way:

Rest days are necessary for recovery and progress. But if you’re worried your rest days are a little too chilled, try something a bit more active. Runners should implement active rest workouts to keep things interesting and moving. On your next rest day try Pilates or yoga to relax and strengthen muscles. You can even set out to find new running routes with a relaxing outdoor walk.

3. Don’t be hard on yourself:

Always remember that running slumps are a part of the process and happen to everyone at some point. Don’t get yourself down if you need to take a few days to try a different workout or simply reset yourself mentally.
