Your Resume, The One Everyone Says Is Great, Keeps You Unemployed

You've had your friends look at your resume ... and they say it's great!

You've had mentors review your resume, and they've said you're good to go.

Even recruiters have said that your resume looks good.

Here's why the resume everyone says is great, keeps you unemployed:

  1. Your Friends Only Know What An Average Resume Looks Like: But they don't know what a resume that performs well looks like. And their average resume got them a job (when they were currently employed, had a different situation/career/industry and/or searching in a less competitive market than 2025).
  2. "Your Resume Looks Great" Means That It's Average: In 2025, employers expect 5-10 qualified candidates competing for each interview spot (So if they are trying to fill 10 spots, they expect 50-100 qualified candidates). This makes your resume that appears qualified, appear average. That makes you average and unemployed, a bad look when employers have many qualified choices.
  3. Your Mentor Didn't Offer You A Job, Did They?: When your ex-boss or friend who is in HR tells you your resume looks good, that means it looks like other resumes they see. Not terrible, but at best qualified (and with all the qualified candidates searching in 2025, qualified = average). If your resume was really that awesome, wouldn't they have offered you a job?
  4. You Need A Higher Goal Than "Looks Good" When You're Unemployed:? Unemployed candidates present higher risks than currently employed candidates. Even if you were let go in a big layoff and it wasn't your fault, employers know that average/below average performers are often included in layoffs. When it was a candidate's fault, don't you think those candidates blame it on the employer's layoff, instead of admitting low/average performance? To overcome hiring manager risk of average/under performance, your resume has to overwhelm your reader with success, mitigating the risk you present as an unemployed job seeker.

So how can you elevate your resume from being seen by employers as qualified/average, to one that makes hiring managers think "It doesn't matter that you're unemployed, I need you on my team"?
