Energy goes where attention flows.

You’ve likely heard one, if not all, of the above sayings.

While I’m not an expert on metaphysics, these notions tend to ring true in life.

Whether you’re a little "woo-woo" (like me) or prefer a more scientific approach, more often than not, what you focus on comes to fruition.

It has to do with the Reticular Activating System (RAS) in your brain, which filters your environment to show you what you’re looking for.

If our brains let everything in, we would constantly be overwhelmed, so your RAS acts like blinders keeping outside information in line with your focus.

The problem arises when you focus on what you don’t want instead of what you do want.

I learned this lesson the hard way.

Years ago, I was in a relationship with someone I thought would cheat on me. I worried about it frequently.

I played scenarios in my head of how I would react to the news. The rumination was real.

Guess what happened… he cheated.

Now, I’m not taking the blame for someone else’s decision—he chose to do what he did. BUT looking back, I can see that my fear of him cheating was so strong that I treated him like a cheater before he had cheated.

Now, one could argue my gut instincts were right all along, but I do think we create an environment for our fears to come true when we focus on them.

During that relationship, I spent more time focusing on what was wrong than on what was right.

Our energy/vibration/beliefs influence the environment of our relationships.

If you walk around frustrated all day, don’t be surprised when you face frustration from your partner.

If you treat your partner like a child, don’t be surprised when they act like a child.

This is why it’s important to set, not match, the energy in your relationship.

Decide how you would like to feel and what you would like to experience, and allow your focus to be on seeking solutions—not problems.

When you take responsibility for the energy you bring to your relationships, the atmosphere in your home will improve.
