Is Your Project Heading For A Crash ?!?

Is Your Project Heading For A Crash ?!?

As part of a project portfolio and even part of a project program, your project is not the only project on the road.  There are many projects on the road with you and not everyone is following the rules of the road.

Drivers break the rules of the road in varying degrees everyday:

  • No seat belt
  • Parking in a no parking zone
  • Texting while driving
  • Ignoring a stop light
  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving

Just like driving project teams break the rules of project management to varying degrees everyday:

  • No project charter or project plan
  • Not understanding requirements
  • Improperly sequencing activities
  • Overloading resources beyond reasonable capacity
  • No change management careening the project out of control
  • Ignoring other projects on the organization highway

Even a project accident can slow everyone down, just like morning rush hour grid lock.

So before you start your project

  1. Understand the rules of the road and know who is on the road with you (what other projects are running).
  2. When planning your project and associated risks take into consideration the other projects that are racing along with you.
  3. And should you find that the project management roadway in your organization is full of pit falls and dangers that could be avoided take the time to improve the conditions.

Improving project road conditions may not help your current project, but projects of the future will have an easier time navigating if you develop safer  project management roadways in your company today.

Truer words! Too easy to forget about other projects when in the thick of things, but we need to remember to take a breath & look around from time to time.
