Is your progress really progress?

Is your progress really progress?

As copywriters turned entrepreneurs, we’re constantly growing our business, conquering obstacles, trying out new tools and tech.?

There’s always another course on the horizon or a webinar to attend, oh and that webpage could use some tweaking. Am I still satisfied with those colors?

You step out of your office breathing heavily, sinking into the nearest chair with a beverage of your choice. “I did so much stuff today!” you exclaim.?

Doing what exactly?

That’s the question Jim Rohn would ask you. He was a brilliant speaker and wrote excellent books like ‘7 strategies for wealth & happiness’ and ‘my philosophy for successful living’. In it, he explains the difference between major and minor time.?

  • Attending courses - minor time.
  • Updating your website - minor time.?
  • Researching clients - minor time.
  • Sending cold pitches - minor time.

Yes, they are useful, but they don’t bring in any money - the life force of any business.

What is major time then, you ask?

  • Being in the presence of the client.?

That’s major time. That’s where you’ll make the money you need to grow your business.?

Be near them. Stalk their social feeds. Let them see your name. Interact with them as much as you can. Maybe you could even try buying their products??

I’ve known several copywriters who closed a deal by purchasing directly from the client, turning that little interaction they had into a sales pitch for a copywriting gig.

Let’s face it, if you spent an entire day attending courses, researching clients, and updating your website, you’d feel pretty exhausted. “Wow! I did so much today!”. When in fact your arch nemesis (let’s call him Evil Bob) was out there talking directly to prospects and then closed two deals.?

This is not me moaning about courses not being useful, or researching clients being a waste of time. I’m talking about you, dear reader, who is paralyzed by a cycle of endless preparation.?

You know if this is you. You’ve got a stacked bookshelf full of literature on copywriting and marketing. You’ve tweaked and tweaked your website until the last pixel was in the right place.?

It’s never enough.

Now it’s time to be in the presence of the client. Get out there, talk with your ideal prospects.?

Tweaking your website again? - There are successful copywriters out there who don’t even have a website. They manage just fine.

Joining another course? - You’ve already got what it takes or you wouldn’t be here. Use what you have. Knowledge gap…? Learn on the job.

Richard Branson once said, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes—then learn how to do it later!”

What’s one thing that has been holding you back from stepping into the arena??

And what are some things you’re doing now that you could categorize by minor time?
