Your Problems Aren’t Unique, But Your Wisdom Is
I’d like to share some insights about my coaching methodology and what value you can take away from it.
Yesterday I ran my session 'A Comedian’s Guide to Communication Strategy’ for creators of LinkedIn's Accelerator Program. Last week I ran the same session for the People and Culture Leadership Team of a Fortune 500 firm. In the next 3 weeks I’m running the session for Partners of one of India’s largest and most prominent law firms. Economic Times’ India Leadership Council has also invited 300 of it’s CEO members to attend this session in Mumbai and Delhi in the month of July.
Why am I telling you this?
Before I elaborate on the value it has to you, let me tell you about my approach.
When I run this session, I follow a 3 step strategy:
1?? I talk about experiences specific to stand-up comedy where I learned something.
2?? I pull out the generic lessons from my experiences, which can be applied to other professions and by other people.
3?? I help my customers understand how those lessons can be applied to their SPECIFIC challenges, whether personal or professional. This is why I’m able to run the same session for people from such diverse backgrounds.
What is the VALUE I’d like for you to extract from this?
? Your Problems Are NOT Unique:?
There may be lessons from completely different fields that you can apply to your challenges. Take time to ask people from very different professions and backgrounds how they solve similar problems in their field. They are likely to give you ideas and answers that you haven’t heard before, since their point of view is not coloured by the lens of your profession.?

If they aren’t able to help you with how to solve the challenge in your specific profession, ask them how they solve something similar in their profession, and see if you can make a connection to how those lessons may apply in your context.?
? Your Wisdom IS Unique:
Your unique life experiences give you a unique point of view. If you are able to extract learnings from your unique experiences, and make the lessons profession-agnostic, you can help others address challenges that are seemingly different. The trick is in understanding how your lessons apply in their context, and being able to customise your counsel to suit their circumstances. It’s even better if you can get them to make that link for themselves.?
Today as an executive coach, I bring to the fore my experiences as a comedian, storyteller, management consultant, Oxford MBA, Harvard Business Review contributor, author, golfer, dancer, biker and a lot more. All of this combined with the experience of having worked with multicultural clients across more than 25 countries, allow me to bring a unique approach, style, content, cultural understanding and sensitivity to my client.
What YOU bring to the table is unique as well.
Are you harnessing the power of your uniqueness by playing in the space where your fields of expertise and experience overlap?
I’d love to hear about your fields of experience, and examples of where you have taken lessons from one field of endeavour and applied it to another.
