Your Practice is a Living Entity

Your Practice is a Living Entity

It's easy to see our practice as just an extension of ourselves, but what if we treated it like its own entity with its personality? This shift in perspective might just change the game for you.

Your Practice: More Than Just a Sidekick Consider your practice as more than a vehicle to express yourself or make money. It's like a partner in your journey; like any good relationship, it needs attention and respect. If you neglect it or take it for granted, it's not going to thrive. You wouldn't expect a friend to always have your back without giving anything in return, right? The same goes for your practice.

Avoiding the Trap of Unrealistic Expectations It's easy to fall into the trap of expecting your practice to do everything—make you happy, bring in the cash, and grow on its own. But let's be honest: that's a lot to ask without putting in the work. Sure, your practice can bring joy and success, but it needs your input and care to do so.

Helping Your Practice Thrive Here are some questions to ponder:

  • Am I treating my practice with respect? Are you giving it the time and resources it needs?
  • What does my practice need to thrive? Maybe it's more marketing, skill-building, or networking. Whatever it is, make sure you're addressing these needs.
  • Are my moods and expectations putting unfair pressure on my practice? Be honest about how your emotions or unrealistic goals might be affecting things.

Takeaways and Exercises

  1. Respect Your Practice: Treat it like a living thing that needs care. Regularly check in on how it's doing.
  2. Balance Expectations: Set goals that match the effort you're willing to put in.
  3. Thinking Exercise: Spend 15 minutes each week focusing on one area of your practice that could use more love. Jot down three actions you can take to improve it.

Seeing your practice as its own entity can create a more sustainable and rewarding journey. This shift not only helps you grow but also turns your practice into a powerful platform for making an impact.

Maybe it's time to take your practice out on a date. Get to know it a little.

Perhaps draft a two-way letter (imaginary chat between you and your practice) where you have a dialogue with your practice. What might it want to say if you stopped and listened for a while?

The answers you get back might shock you. Please give it a go and let me know what your practice has been dying to say to you.
