?The building blocks of your Performance
In the world of personal development, this equation is huge. It has helped countless people to realise why their performance is being compromised and why they are feeling left disappointed by themselves. Not achieving what we set ourselves out to achieve makes us feel bad, and if it happens over and over again we start doubting our abilities, we start doubting ourselves. When doubt creeps in, our performance goes down.
Performance = Potential – Interference
As human beings we have a tremendous amount of Potential – much more than we realise. We look in awe at people who we think have achieved tremendous things for themselves and/or the world. But we rarely stop and think about our own Potential to achieve great things too.
The compromising factor: Interference
As we all have tremendous amounts of Potential, the reason why we experience less than wonderful results has to do with the Interference in our lives – be it at home, at work or in business.
Interference can manifest itself as many different things – some of which are obviously interfering and some of which aren’t. Although Interference is seen and perceived differently by people, the more obvious interfering factors can be anything from demanding and interrupting colleagues at work, loud music, noise, or perhaps the lack of time or money. Simply speaking, it’s the things, people or circumstances that we know are impacting on our Performance negatively.
There is another category of Interference. The less obvious one. Ironically, it’s the Interference which originates in ourselves. This can be the things we say to ourselves, out loud or in our thoughts, the things we allow to disempower us and to make us doubt our own capabilities. It can be our beliefs about what we can or cannot achieve, about how worthy or deserving we think we are of the success we want. Anything that comes from us, originates in us and makes us feel bad belongs into this dangerous category.
The danger of Interference
Although it can be difficult, it is relatively easy to address the obvious Interference as opposed to the less obvious one. For example, you may find it difficult to stand your ground and ask your demanding and interrupting colleagues at work to leave you to focus on your priorities. But at least you know what the Interference is that is directly impacting your Performance. With the right approach, the Interference can be managed.
It’s the less obvious Interference that is the dangerous one. Why? Because more often than not we don’t stop and question our negative beliefs, we don’t question our negative self-talk – often we don’t even realise we are doing it. Yet with every word that we say or think which is not aligned with what we want, we are continuing to do ourselves a huge disservice. We are compromising our Potential, which manifests itself in the way we behave/act and ultimately in the results we get (Performance).
Managing dangerous Interference
Once you are aware of what is holding you back on a less obvious, subconscious, level you are on the right track. Awareness of the root cause gives you the freedom to address it. And by doing so you take your power back! Awareness disempowers Interference.
For example, you may not believe today that you can run 10K in under 45 minutes (or run that much even without any time limits). But once you start exploring the limiting belief, once you start thinking about what is actually holding you back from even starting to train, once you experience for yourself that training makes you consistently stronger and fitter, you start tapping into your Potential. As you do, your Performance increases and you start getting better results.
Once you watch, I’d love you to hear from you.
- What are the obvious Interferences in your life right now?
- And how about the less obvious ones, what do you think they are?
- How are these Interferences impacting your Potential and your Performance?
- What are you willing to do to get back on track?
Even just a quick comment will help you to start taking your power back.

6 年This is brilliant Sonja and very timely. Obvious interference = the entrance gates at my open plan workplace make a beeping sound every time one of our numerous staff enter or leave. It drives me mad! So I sit away from my functional team to get way from the noise. Subconscious interference = I'm not sure I can do this. I fear I can't do this. So I leave it till the last minute and then I can't!
