Not Your Parents’ Company

Not Your Parents’ Company

I recently had the chance to spend a lot of quality time with family, which I’m grateful for given how busy this new year (and new decade!) has already been. Just like at work, I like spending time with the twenty-something members of my family, which includes my kids, to get perspective on the things that they care about. I’ve been thinking a lot about what it would be like if they were looking for a job at ExxonMobil, and how appealing we are for the next generation. Admittedly, I’m not always sure that folks know about the opportunities we have to offer.

For starters, we are one of the world’s biggest tech companies with high-tech R&D labs. We have thousands of scientists and engineers working to find the technological innovations that will help us solve the dual challenge: meeting the world’s growing demand for energy while curtailing carbon emissions that are contributing to climate change. We have graduates in our labs from every discipline imaginable – over 2,000 Ph.D.s in research alone, representing nearly every academic area. That’s because we need to innovate across dozens if not hundreds of fields to unlock new solutions.

Within our Upstream Integrated Solutions Company, which I lead, we tackle tough business issues across our upstream operations. On any given day, those could include everything from reservoir engineering or digital transformation solutions to economic modeling.

We’re always looking to the future and we’re relying on the next generation of innovators to get us there. I see them every day working to help solve the dual energy challenge. They participate in our employee groups, such as our global LGBTQ Pride organization, where I’m honored to serve as the management sponsor. We are diverse and we are international. If you want to work overseas, you can get that opportunity – in dozens of countries – working with us.

I am looking forward to another year of meeting the next generation who are already making a difference at our company – maybe even those who aren’t yet fully aware of the exciting opportunities we offer.
