Your PA EDition for June

Boston, EMUG2024 and submission systems in academic publishing. My thoughts.

As you may have seen, Sarah and I attended the EMUG2024 conference in Boston this June.

This event, hosted by Aries (the parent company of Editorial Manager), brought together users of one of the most widely used submission systems in academic publishing.

Our team of over 100 Managing Editors has extensive experience with this system, but continuous learning is essential in our ever-evolving technological landscape. We primarily use two submission systems: ScholarOne and Editorial Manager . Both are excellent, though they differ in appearance and usability.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to network with users from around the world. Day one featured round table discussions, where Aries teams engaged with users to understand their needs and challenges, allowing them to tailor the conference to address these key areas effectively.

The conference featured several noteworthy speakers. Robert Harrington discussed the risks and rewards of AI, urging us to embrace this opportunity. He posed an intriguing question: “Will AI actually give us more self-actualizing me time? Can we relax while AI handles our tasks?” This thought-provoking idea addresses common concerns about AI taking jobs, highlighting instead how it can enhance service efficiency and cost-effectiveness for clients, potentially expanding our client base. He shared several insightful articles, including "How to Build a Private LLM: A Comprehensive Guide," "AI for Impact: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Social Innovation," and a useful Generative AI Tracker from Ithaka S+R .

Darci Dubreuil delivered an insightful talk on research integrity, focusing on the increasing issue of papermill submissions and retractions. Key points included:

  1. Retraction Watch Database: This database contains 48,000 retractions across all publishers, with authorship changes being the most prominent reason. Retractions are on the rise, with this year projected to have the highest number.
  2. Managing Authorship Changes: Ensure internal policies require editor approval for authorship changes. Analyze submission data to identify unethical practices and refine policies accordingly.
  3. Fake Peer Reviews: The incidence of fake reviews has increased, often involving suggested reviewers from corresponding authors who quickly submit positive reports. Elsevier and Aries have implemented Identity Confidence Checks (ICC) to flag suspicious reviewers.
  4. Editor and Guest Editor Monitoring: Monitor editors for conflicts of interest and unethical collaboration.
  5. Citation Manipulation: A tool developed by Elsevier and Aries helps analyze manuscript references, flagging potential integrity issues based on citation patterns.

Darci emphasized the importance of robust internal policies and tools to detect and address unethical practices in research submissions and peer reviews.

We also heard from Nathan Westgarth who talked us through the Editorial Manager 2024 Roadmap, their workflow, performance and reliability enhancements improvements, third party integrations and how they plan to move forward, encompassing AI and LLMS.

Overall, EMUG2024 significantly enhanced our understanding of current industry practices, and we are eager to share our insights with our peers.

The Spotlight

This month, we celebrate Amy Hyde and Lou Joseph. Amy and Lou work on two journals together and on other journals separately but the feedback we have had for all the journals that they are involved with has been excellent across the board.

For example a publisher said "I wanted to add, the editors on the journal have nothing but praise for Amy and Lou. I meant to pass this on earlier. It’s all too easy to forget to pass on positive feedback! All the more so as they do not give out praise lightly!”. An editor also reported: “Before Lou and Amy came on board, I was about to throw the towel. The switch of online systems and tech-hiccups sapped so much time and nerves. Their support has helped so much!”

Another publisher for a journal that Amy works on stated ”all of the Editors commented how great it has been to have you working on the title. How organised and helpful you are – very positive comments! I wanted to let you know, and say thank you from everyone!” and similarly for Lou: “I have no problems with the peer review process of the journal and Lou of course, who has been of great help and of quick response.”

And these are just a few examples! Thank you so much Lou and Amy for your outstanding work on your journals, and also for your excellent team work on the journals you share. You’re both highly valued members of our team.

Other News & Research

EASE hosted a fantastic webinar today, featuring some interesting studies. Mike Thelwall , Professor of Data Science in the Information School at the University of Sheffield, presented how LLMs, particularly ChatGPT, can assess manuscripts for their standing within the academic publishing realm. Can ChatGPT identify whether a manuscript is merely 'good' or truly 'world-class.' Interestingly, ChatGPT provided some amusing feedback on a fictitious article about Squirrel Surgeons, indicating it still has some learning to do.
