Be Your Own Boss. Free Startup Program Launches Today.

With July 4 around the corner, the kind of independence most on my mind is personal. Our neighbors are hurting. With COVID-19, crazy high unemployment heightened and needed sensitivity to the structural racism in our country, and uncertainty about what the world looks like in 2021, there is much to struggle with. I'm deeply encouraged and excited that, just like founders do, one of my founder friends is leaning into this and creating magic out of the mess.

David Cummings, someone who’s been instrumental in helping me launch more than one of my businesses, just launched a 12 week digital bootcamp to scale the support every new founder needs. Every founder--me included--gets help starting their business. He's finding a way to make that support and encouragement something you can get, too.

David created a FREE 12 week program to help you be your own boss.

It’s called Start It Up Georgia and he just announced it last night. If you’re one of the thousands of Georgians who lost your job—or hates it—this program is for you. Apply here before the end of this month. (I won’t be hurt one bit if you stop reading this now and –that’s right—go apply. It’s that good. In fact, why are you still reading?)

But if you want to know a bit more about it, here are three things I'd like to share:

1.    This is legit. David is a friend of mine who’s been starting businesses since he was in high school building web sites. He loves founders and he knows what you need to know—his DNA is in this program. But it’s better than that. He’s recruited a slate of top mentors and speakers from all races and genders to support Georgians who want to start their business now. This program looks like Georgia. It's not Atlanta. It's not Buckhead. It's us.

2.    This is not a hand-out, it’s a hand-up. Georgians are stronger together, and with the personal peer mentorship groups that meet on Wednesdays, you’ll get coaching and peer support to take your business concepts to the next level—and even decide which of your business dreams are most likely to succeed.

3.    It’s for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never started a business or have no idea how to do it—perfect! This program starts from zero and takes you through 12 weeks of digital business bootcamp built by Georgians, for Georgians. You literally have NOTHING to lose and the potential of your own independence to gain.

If you’ve dreamed of being your own boss but didn’t know where to start, dare to do this. You won’t be sorry. It’s scary starting your own business—I totally know that. But it’s a skill and you can learn it—the trick is finding people who can actually teach it! And this program has got you covered.

I personally fought being a founder until I was “asked to leave” my last job almost 20 years ago. Turns out--what a surprise--lots of founders don’t do well in structured jobs! When I started charging people for my skills as a way to meet my mortgage, my life really began and I’ve never looked back. It’s worth it. I know dozens of founders who lost a job to discover, with some trials and tribulations and the support of others, that their passion could pay them. No one does it by themselves, and you don’t have to either. Are you ready now? Then don’t wait. Apply here. Takes 5 minutes.

And PLEASE share this with at least 2 other people who could use this support, this hope, this network, and this opportunity right now. #payitforward

Lisa, please untag me from this post. I’m not interested in being tagged or affiliated with any program that isn’t built with racial equity and includes more then performative mentorship. When you, David, Blake, Knox, Mark and other colleagues are prepared to invest in Black funds, founders and accelerators at equitable and sustainable scale rather than tokenized appropriation, let me know. Until then, respectively, do not include me. I’ve been very vocal in the media about my position and have been working tirelessly at scalable national solutions: Atlanta Inno: https://www.americaninno.com/atlanta/inno-insights/diverse-founders-fighting-for-racial-equality-change-in-atlanta-tech/ Feld: https://feld.com/archives/2020/06/the-racial-equity-ecosystem-pledge.html
