"Your output is only as good as your input"

ChatGPT is no longer a brand new tool and most people have had the chance to check it out. If you haven't, don't worry. Let me save you 6 months of trial and error with some tips.

Most people use ChatGPT to brainstorm crazy business ideas, write poems about their dogs, or generate bed-time stories for their kids. A fraction of ChatGPT users are finding real life use cases for the technology.

What most people don't realize is there truly is a science or art to prompting ChatGPT. I'm sure everyone has heard of prompt engineering by now. If you haven't, the definition of prompt engineering (according to ChatGPT) is:

"The art of asking the right questions or giving the right instructions to ChatGPT, or any conversational AI model, to get the best possible answers or results".

So let's dive into how you should structure your prompts, that way you can use ChatGPT to help you with work and not just generate random business ideas or poems about pets.

There are 4 things that you need to include in every single one of your FIRST prompts when you start a new chat:

  1. Assign a role: Tell ChatGPT that they are an expert in whatever task you want ChatGPT to help you with. This takes ChatGPT's massive "brain" and narrows its expertise down to your desired use case.
  2. Provide context: Tell ChatGPT who you are and what you are looking to do. This will narrow ChatGPT's focus even closer to your desired use case.
  3. Give a command: Tell ChatGPT EXACTLY what you want it to do. A lot of people think ChatGPT has the power to read your mind, but we aren't quite there... yet.
  4. Tell ChatGPT to ask you questions: This will give ChatGPT all of the context it needs to carry out the task you assigned it. ChatGPT will generally generate 3-7 questions that it needs answers to in order to give you the valuable output you are wanting.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for quality ChatGPT output. But trust me, start here and you will not regret it.
