Is Your Organization Oscar Ready?
The red carpet, glitz and glam of the Oscars is what the general public sees – but I saw first hand that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences represents an organization that we should all emulate.
I am by no means an expert on AMPAS – but I write this having attended the 90th Oscars this past weekend for the first time.
I believe their success can be attributed to four main steps that any organization can adopt.
The first is recruit the right people. Every contact I had with representatives of the Academy were glowing and personable. The visitor guests were made to feel like they were the number one priority. The ground troops - in addition to the full-time staff – brought a seasoned, polished feel to their entire event. This is how it should be for any organization that is public facing.
The second is to develop a great plan. In my career – I have seen that successful organizations spend 80% of their time in planning and 20% in execution. That was very evident this past weekend. It appeared that every detail was prepared for – from check-in to bus shuttles to security to food and more.
The third is execution. You can have all the great planning – but your great plan will not have the desired outcomes if you cannot execute. Your ability to recruit committed key partners, communicate with your stakeholders, and communicate your plan to your team are powerful indicators whether the plan will be successfully executed. From an attendee perspective - never once did I not know where to go, what services we available, what was up next on the program or concerned for my well being. I attribute this to the dedicated AMPAS team and the communication of the plan.
The last is review. With the completion of any plan – it is so crucial to review how things were executed and how can improvements be made. Only with critical reviews – and I don’t mean blaming of weaknesses – but reviews to learn from any missteps - can an organization truly grow.
