Your organisation will only be as strong as the weakest member of your team
I am not sure about you, but since I was a kid, this has always been the ultimate rule on the playground, on the basketball court, and in business. True, teamwork is important in an organisation, where we help each other to progress towards a common goal. And I am very happy to see my team progress and grow in their career. I will be the passionate coach and will drill them to produce the right kind of analysis and make them arrive at their own conclusions for recommended actions. But there are times you will notice someone that no matter what you do, or others do, just can't make the cut. In fact, this person will then become a leech, and will rely on others to get the work done. And I am very sure that you have seen this kind of behavior before. On the basketball court, on the relay team, and while playing dodge ball ("I swear that kid has a magnetic effect on that ball!").
If you ever find yourself in this situation, do yourself and your team a favor; start behaving like a Spartan. Spartans are known to kill babies that are deformed or not physically ideal. You need to cull the weak from your team because very soon, your team will find that they will be carrying this dead weight and will soon foment resentment. In a very short time, chinks will appear in your armor and the enemy will break your team apart. Don't let this happen to you.
Pull the weakest member of your team aside and have a heart-to-heart talk. Both of you have to be frank to each other. Are there any personal problems affecting his performance at work? Is he not suited for the job role? Maybe he's having a mid-life crisis? Maybe quarter-life? No matter what the reason is, if he's not suitable to be on the team, then he has to be reassigned, moved elsewhere, or leave the organisation. Be fair to the both of you. There's a reason that the Navy Seals have a brutal selection process; only the top 1% is selected. Because that 1% will replace the other 99% and are guaranteed to kick some serious ass.
“This is Sparta!”

7 年Excellent piece, Victor. Identifying the weakest link early is crucial to prevent larger cracks in the ship.
