Your Opinion Is Worthless, And So Is Mine.

Your Opinion Is Worthless, And So Is Mine.

If the United States elections taught us anything, it taught us that all the opinions that we had were wrong. Some were just wrong more than others. But all the so-called “experts” were wrong. So, if you are wrong most or all of the time, how did you become an expert in the first place? That’s easy, you just proclaim that you are. Or maybe someone else does.

I remember my first interview on the Fox Business Channel. I was on an airplane afterwards and called my wife to tell her all about it. When the call was over a woman next to me asked about it. After I told her she said, “So you must be an expert”. And I thought, for the first time “I guess I am.”

Just because someone calls me an expert, doesn’t make me one. I am wrong in my opinions most of the time. But as my old Uncle Burt used to say, “it is only an opinion. It cannot be right, and it cannot be wrong” This is the point: listen to opinions but always remember they are only opinions, they are not facts. The fact is that we live in a world of uncertainty, where the only known is the unknown. Ponder that…

Great post Steve! I'd also agree with Bill here that the media is in the same boat, an opinion machine where the facts don't matter. Facts themselves are no longer trustworthy. The influence of opinion and greed run deep, from balance sheets to scientific research. To fully trust anything or anyone in today's day and age is ignorant at its best and dangerous at it's worst. My opinion is that we need to take it all in, stay positive and try to be better. Thank you for the thought provoking post Steve. It isn't easy to put your opinions on the internet.

So, so true! Most supposed news media outlets today should be labeled as opinion spreaders (manure anyone?).
