Is Your One-on-One Taking You in the Wrong Direction?

Is Your One-on-One Taking You in the Wrong Direction?

In my previous post, I explored the challenges of surveys, and now I’d like to share my thoughts on to one-on-one meetings (1:1s). One-on-one meetings are among the sharpest tools available to organizations. However, due to both wrong usage and other factors, the tool fails terribly to assess the team dynamics in majority of the cases.

?Here are some of the reasons for its failure.

?1. Inconsistent Scheduling

Managers and team members often get caught up in daily operations, leading to irregular 1:1 meetings. With new projects, looming deadlines, we overlook these sessions. If feedback isn’t gathered continuously, it loses its value, making it difficult to get a continuous picture of team sentiment. You cannot afford to miss any beat of your team.

?2. Pressured Feedback

Employees may feel pressured to give responses that aren’t fully honest or thoughtful. The environment of a one-on-one should encourage openness, but if team members believe they need to present a certain image or avoid conflict, the feedback gathered may be skewed.

?3. Information Loss and Distortion

Even when valuable data is collected, it can easily be lost or distorted in the process. Managers might forget to document action items or fail to follow up on them. Additionally, relevant insights may not effectively make their way up the management chain, resulting in a disconnect that can lead to missed opportunities.

?Imagine relying on inaccurate data to shape your team's future strategy. This can stifle growth and prevent your team from thriving in an ever-evolving environment.
