Your Nonprofit Mission Statement Shouldn’t Be a Mystery—Or a Missed Opportunity

As a nonprofit CEO, you inherited your mission statement—or created it in a conference room long ago.
Remember, back when the world (and your nonprofit) looked very different?
Now, when you read it, do you feel confident? Or, do you feel like it could belong to any nonprofit?
You’re not alone.
In one of my recent CEO Conversations, half of the leaders admitted their mission statements weren’t working.
From my work assessing hundreds of nonprofits, I’ve seen it too often — vague, forgettable, or polished statements that could describe any nonprofit.
Mission statements that sound like:
? “We support the arts.” (But do you run an arts festival? A visual arts education program? A community mural project?)
? “We strengthen families.” (Through what—counseling, housing, financial literacy, foster care support? And which families?)
? ?“Be the best in our class.” (Who measures and who benefits? And why? What change are you driving?)
When your nonprofit mission statement is vague, everything is harder.
Fundraising, program planning, and even board meetings—all rely on that clear sense of who you are, who you serve, and the change you create.
Without clarity, you often chase opportunities that aren’t yours. You struggle to tell your story. You scroll instead of doing.
Your Mission Statement Is a Strategic Decision
