Your Next Move in Revenue Management and Hotel Technology: How to Choose the Right Role

We are less than a week away of the largest trade show in Europe; yes, it still is. ITB Berlin 2025. There are various reasons to be there. One of them is is very obviously an opportunity to see what is out there on the job market. Whether you are working on the hotel, service, or technology side it is a greate opportunity to see and to be seen. I remember exactly 10 years ago I sneaked over to another booth to seal the deal with a future employer (even if that journey ended fairly quickly, but that is another Rita Story to tell). Choosing your next role however, can be challenging as you need to evaluate several aspects of a company. Sometimes the grass just looks greener, but does it really? In today's Part 2 Pre ITB Rita Story let's talk about what to consider when choosing your next role. We can of course help you get there. Spoiler alert you don't have to sneak off to see me I can come to you. Let's meet in Berlin .

Unlocking new opportunities in revenue management, sales, marketing, and partnerships, the hospitality and travel technology sectors offer exciting paths for career growth. Whether you’re looking to advance in hotel technology or revenue management, finding the right next step requires strategic thinking.

A new job isn't just about a title or paycheck—it’s about aligning with the right company, culture, and career path. It’s a two-way street: while companies evaluate candidates, you should also be assessing the company, the role, and the long-term opportunities.

Here’s what you should consider when evaluating your next opportunity in hotel technology and revenue management:

1. Company Culture: Do You Fit?

Culture matters. A great salary and title won’t compensate for a poor cultural fit. Before committing to a company, ask yourself:

  • Work environment: Do they foster innovation, collaboration, and professional growth?
  • Values and leadership: Do their values align with your own? Does leadership encourage learning and career development?
  • Flexibility: Is the company remote-first, hybrid, or office-based? Does that align with your preferred work style?

Company culture directly impacts job satisfaction and long-term success. It’s important to work in an environment where you feel motivated and valued.

2. Company Size & Growth Stage: Stability vs. Agility

The size and growth stage of the company you work for will have a major influence on your daily tasks and responsibilities

  • Startups & scale-ups offer agility, fast decision-making, and hands-on experience across multiple roles. If you thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy building things from scratch, this could be the right fit. However, expect rapid changes, evolving structures, and sometimes less job stability.
  • Mid-sized companies often offer a balance of structure and innovation, providing career growth opportunities without excessive bureaucracy.
  • Large enterprises provide stability, well-defined career paths, and strong market presence, but often come with more rigid processes and longer decision-making cycles.

What type of company do you see yourself growing in? The choices you make now will shape your future in the industry. By considering the type of company that aligns with your goals and aspirations, you can strategically position yourself for growth and success.

3. Product-Market Fit: Is the Company’s Solution in Demand?

In hotel and travel technology, product-market fit is crucial—especially for customer-facing like sales and partnerships. Understanding the market and customer needs is key to success in these roles.

Here are some things you should consider:

  • Is the product solving a real industry pain point? Does the technology improve hotel operations, enhance guest experience, or drive revenue growth?
  • Who are the customers? Are they independent hotels, global chains, or OTAs? Does the company have a strong and growing customer base?
  • Is the company innovating? In a rapidly changing landscape, companies that adapt and evolve will have long-term success.

If the company’s product is struggling to gain traction, it could mean a difficult sales process, slow growth, or even job instability, and low employee morale, creating a challenging work environment.

4. Sales Cycle & Opportunity: Does the Business Model Align with Your Strengths?

For sales, account management, or partnerships roles, understanding the sales cycle is critical. This includes prospecting and identifying potential clients, building relationships and establishing rapport, presenting solutions and handling objections, negotiating contracts and closing deals, and providing ongoing support and account management to ensure customer satisfaction and retention.

  • Short sales cycles (weeks to a couple of months) mean high transaction volume and fast-paced sales environments. These roles require strong relationship-building skills and quick decision-making.
  • Long sales cycles (6+ months) involve complex decision-making, multiple stakeholders, and high-value deals. If you have experience in enterprise sales, this may be a great fit.
  • Recurring revenue vs. one-time sales: Subscription-based models (SaaS) offer long-term revenue potential, while one-time sales require continuous prospecting.

When selecting a company to work for, it's crucial to ensure that their sales process aligns with both your current skills and knowledge and your future career goals. Look for a company that utilizes sales strategies and techniques that you're familiar with and that play to your strengths. Additionally, consider whether the company's sales approach offers opportunities for you to learn and grow in the direction you want to take your career.

5. The Right Role: Where Do You Add the Most Value?

The travel technology space provides a wide range of career opportunities. Here are some examples:

  • Sales & Business Development – Building client relationships, selling technology solutions, and driving revenue growth.
  • Marketing & Partnerships – Driving brand awareness, demand generation, and strategic industry collaborations.
  • Account Management & Customer Success – Managing existing client relationships, ensuring adoption and retention.
  • Solution Engineering & Implementation – Helping hotels adopt and integrate new technologies.
  • Product Management & Project Management – Developing and improving technology solutions to meet market needs.

When searching for the perfect role, it's crucial to consider more than just your past experiences. While your skills and background are undoubtedly important, finding a position where you can truly make a significant impact should be a top priority. This involves assessing your strengths and weaknesses, identifying areas where you can add the most value, and aligning your career goals with the needs of the company and the industry as a whole.

Remember that your ideal role may not always be the most obvious choice based on your previous experience. Sometimes, taking a step outside of your comfort zone and exploring new opportunities can lead to unexpected growth and success. By focusing on your potential for impact, you can find a role that not only utilizes your existing skills but also challenges you to learn and develop new ones, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and rewarding career.

It’s a Two-Way Street: Evaluate Your Fit

The hiring process isn’t just about companies evaluating candidates—it’s about you assessing if the opportunity is the right fit.

Ask yourself:

  • Does the company align with my long-term career goals?
  • Will I be working with a team and leadership that inspires me?
  • Does the company’s growth trajectory match my ambitions?
  • Will I be challenged, supported, and given opportunities to grow?

A strategic move today can set the foundation for your long-term career growth in the hospitality and travel technology space.
