Do you have a destination mindset??What do I mean by that?
I own a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and occasionally I go with some really great friends on long rides across the country.?These consist of rides usually in excess of a thousand miles, possibly two or three thousand.?We’ve ridden several times to Panama Beach, FL.?Once to Austin, TX.?Even to Winslow, AZ.?(Yes, I stood on the corner.)?
Perhaps you have noticed it's common for people to have different mindsets and attitudes, so no surprises there.?Even when traversing the country on a motorcycle with a group of four, five or six people, we are all different in attitude and personality.?
For example,?some prefer to ride in the back of the group.?Some prefer to lead.?Some prefer to go faster than what I believe is safe. ?Some are too slow and won’t keep up. ?And some… just want to get there!?Wherever “there” is.?And as quickly as possible. These are not necessarily wrong or right; they are just different.
Alternatively, some of us want to enjoy the scenery. I prefer the two-lane road option, as opposed to the 4 lanes.?Stop and enjoy a cup of coffee at a local café. Explore. Take time and enjoy the ride.?(That’s me.)
I simply prefer to enjoy the journey differently than some.?Ultimately, there is always compromise. When you think about it, there is always more than one way to reach a final destination, whether on a motorcycle or in business. ?
In business and life, slower is sometimes better.?It may be the difference between seeking short-term pleasure or long-term fulfillment, short-term profit, or long-term success. A topic for another discussion, perhaps.
Do you have a destination mindset? Are you prone to getting there as fast as possible, checking the box? Or do you prefer a slower, more calculated pace?
I’m not speaking of setting goals.?We all should engage in that process.?Perhaps more often than we do.?But, every individual’s Definition Of Success (DOS) is different.?And that is why a team approach has value.
Destination may take the form of arriving at some temporary success.?Very seldom is the sense of accomplishment long-lasting. Get the new car. A nice vacation.?New job. The college degree.?The promotion. The new toy at Christmas time.?What is your next “Big Thing”? More often than not, the temporary fulfillment is just that! Temporary.
If you find yourself constantly thinking; saying to yourself, ?“Once I get__________”? as in;
Once I get my book written then I______.
Once I get my leadership team in place, then I _______.

Once I get my real estate license then I______.
Once I get that key employee position filled then I ______.
Once I get my degree then _____.
Once I get that dream job ______.
Once I get ________________?
Whatever your "Once I get" is, recognize it's never a final destination. It is a pathway to a new road. Maybe to the view of a new horizon. And just like the horizon, one can never truly get there.
Your "Once I get__________", very often leads to more, something else, something more enticing, something more to have, something more to be, something more to do.?
And that….?that is a good thing because it keeps us purposed.
I’m not saying we should not be driven to improve.?I’m not saying that we shouldn’t long for a better future.?I’m not saying that we should be satisfied with the current circumstances in our lives or not have goals.
If you're like me, the next big thing in your professional or personal life will never satisfy your longing to be, do, or have more.
Don’t forget to take joy in your current accomplishments along the way regardless of how you got there.?Fast or slow.
The motorcycle trips??
They have been among the most fulfilling things in my life. Life is, after all, a journey. Enjoy the ride. Stop looking for the next "Big Thing" without relishing the current accomplishment.
It’s been said, “Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it,”
