Your Next 5 Moves: How To Get What You Really Want

Today, we will delve into the concept of strategic thinking and planning, inspired by Patrick Bet-David's book 'Your Next 5 Moves'. We'll explore how successful entrepreneurs have applied this concept to achieve their goals, and how you can do the same.?

This post will be in 2 parts. Part 1, this week, talks in a general sense about applying how to think 5 moves ahead using real-world examples of it.

Part 2 will be how I have taken this mindset and applied it to my own business.?

Think of life as a game of chess. Each move you make has an impact on the game. You need to think several moves ahead, anticipate your opponent's moves, and make strategic decisions to win.

This is the essence of 'Your Next 5 Moves'.

Thinking five moves ahead is the best thing you can do for your life because it allows you to anticipate challenges, seize opportunities, and make decisions that will set you up for success in the long run. It's about being proactive rather than reactive, shaping your future rather than letting it happen to you.

Let's delve deeper into why thinking five moves ahead is so powerful:

  • Anticipate Challenges: By thinking ahead, you can anticipate potential obstacles and challenges. This gives you time to prepare, plan, and strategise, increasing your chances of overcoming them.
  • Seize Opportunities: Thinking ahead also allows you to see opportunities that others might miss. You can position yourself to seize these opportunities, giving you a competitive edge.
  • Make Strategic Decisions: When you think five moves ahead, you decide where you want to be in the future, not just where you are now. This leads to more strategic, forward-thinking decisions.

Let's look at some famous business leaders who have exemplified this concept:

Sara Blakely, Spanx: Blakely didn't just stop at creating comfortable shapewear. She envisioned Spanx as a brand that would redefine comfort and confidence for women. She anticipated the need for inclusive sizing, comfort-focused design, and diverse product offerings. By thinking a few moves ahead on where the market was going, she expanded Spanx into various markets, from activewear to men's undergarments, making it a global brand.

Stewart Butterfield, Slack: Butterfield's initial plan was to build a game, but when that didn't work out, he didn't give up. Instead, he considered what he could do with what he had, looked at the communication tool his team had developed, and saw its potential. He anticipated the need for a more efficient and organised communication tool in the workplace. By thinking ahead, he pivoted and launched Slack, revolutionising workplace communication.

James Dyson, Dyson: Dyson didn't just stop at creating a better vacuum cleaner. He saw the potential of his cyclonic technology and anticipated its application in various markets. He expanded Dyson into personal care and air treatment, making it a global brand. By thinking ahead, he transformed Dyson from a home appliance company into a technology company.

Just like in chess, these entrepreneurs thought several moves ahead. They anticipated future needs, made strategic decisions, and executed their plans with precision.

By thinking ahead, you solve future problems, and whilst it can mean the initial pain of disruption in the short term, you will thank yourself for it later on.?

So, here's how you can apply the 'Next 5 Moves' concept to get what you really want:

  1. Clarify your vision: Know exactly what you want in the next 5 years. Be specific. This is your end goal.
  2. Identify your obstacles: Understand what's standing in your way. It could be skills, resources, or mindset. These are the challenges you need to overcome.
  3. Create your moves: Plan your actions. What do you need to do to overcome your obstacles and achieve your vision? These are your next 5 moves.
  4. Execute at the highest level: Take action with precision and excellence. Don't just do something; do it well. This is how you make your moves.
  5. Evaluate and adjust: Learn from your results and adapt. Success is a journey, not a destination. This is how you stay ahead of the game.

Remember, getting what you really want is like playing chess. It's about thinking ahead. It's about making strategic moves today that will position you for success tomorrow. It's about seeing the future and making it happen.

I'll see you next week for part 2. Until then, keep hustling, keep growing, and keep building.
