I agree! I often would just stay with a manager I didn't hate. I didn't know any better. As idiotic as it sounds, I had trouble discerning which ones were really supporting my career. I know that I was rarely (if ever) the favorite or the superstar. I got comfortable being in the "middle of the pack" where I was not voted off the island, ever!
