Is Your Moral Compass Working?

You’re on a hike with an acquaintance, you’re out of food and water, dusk is approaching, and your phones are dead.

Fortunately, you still have a compass, although you are beginning to have doubts that it’s working because your gut tells you that you’re going further away from home and safety.

Your friend, however, with no knowledge of navigation, why a compass may stop working, and a history of bad judgment, loudly insists on using the compass.?

So, against your better judgment, you follow along and pursue a path that will lead you and others to ruin.

Our Broken Moral Compass

Politicians and their family members accepting and soliciting bribes are commonplace.

Business leaders intentionally defraud investors, sell addictive drugs that kill users, and mistreat employees based on sex, race, religion, and other biases that have infected their brains.?

University Presidents who severely punish microaggressions on campus hypocritically permit hateful demonstrations that leave other students in fear for their physical safety and emotional well-being.

Terrorists whose purpose includes murder, rape, decapitation, killing children in front of their parents, parents in front of their children, torture, and hostage-taking are claiming they are the victims.

How Can I Tell if My Moral Compass Needs Recalibration?

Here is a small list that indicates a problem with your morality, and yes, some are clearly worse than others:

·????? You are unable to denounce the actions of Hamas unequivocally.

·????? You find yourself saying, “I blame the victims.”

·????? You rip off posters that depict hostages in Gaza while applauding your humanity for not touching the poster about someone’s missing pet.

·????? You support women’s rights to be free from violence and rape but will not condemn the mass rapes and extreme violence that left Israeli victims with broken pelvises.

·????? You have no reaction when learning that women were separated by the attackers into these categories 1) take back to Gaza as a hostage, 2) rape now, 3) kill immediately.

·????? You claim to be anti-Zionist, not antisemitic.

·????? Your “news” organization requires verification from Israeli authorities regarding “decapitated babies” but accepts immediately the false claim that Israel targeted a hospital and 500 were killed. (The hospital suffered damage from a Hamas rocket that killed Gazan citizens and detonated in the hospital's parking lot.)

·????? Even when provided with evidence that the Hamas statement is false, it takes you days to retract your initial reporting.

·????? Your organization rehires a Hitler supporter as a field reporter. (Hey, 纽约时报 , you keep making the list! “All the news that’s fit to twist.”)

·????? You justify taking hostages and Hamas’ complete disregard for international guidelines regarding access to those hostages by humanitarian organizations.

·????? Your government continues to provide hundreds of millions in aid to support humanitarian efforts even though it’s well-documented that the funds and aid go first to Hamas to manufacture rockets, build a network of tunnels under civilian structures, and make Hamas leaders very wealthy. (Most of it never helps the residents of Gaza.)

·????? You claim Israel is evil for cutting off water (to its proven enemy) while videos of your members digging up water pipes and converting them into rocket launchers are available on the web.

·????? You chant, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” a slogan demonstrating the desire to annihilate all the Jews and non-Jews “from the river to the sea.”

·????? You rightly spoke out against the killing of George Floyd, Russia’s attack on Ukraine, LGBTQ rights, and other important issues, but you can’t seem to oppose this horrific violence against Israel.

·????? You hold people to different standards of behavior and frequently share that taking sides in this matter is difficult because “it’s complicated.”

·????? You don’t question Hamas’ claims that they will soon run out of food, water, and medicine but somehow still have thousands of rockets to launch indiscriminately.

·????? You gladly pay ridiculous tuition fees at schools that choose to indoctrinate instead of teaching and encouraging questions.

·????? You can’t define “apartheid,” but throw it around as if you’re being nominated for a Nobel Peace prize.

·????? You can only condemn the civilian deaths that occur during strikes on military targets, not the ones aimed at civilians.

?How Can You “Recalibrate” Your Moral Compass?

1)??? Understand what makes you a moral person. Try to align your behaviors with your self-perception.

2)??? Education is critical. Verify the history and accuracy of messages before acting. Learn about viewpoints you may ordinarily dismiss and fairly evaluate them against your moral code.

3)??? Support truth and justice EQUALLY. If you pick and choose based on bias, you are part of the problem.

4)??? Question your biases - yes, we all have biases - and adapt if they are no longer correct. The world is constantly changing. Our morality is a foundation for living, and biases are cracks that need attention.

5)??? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

What would you like to say about the need for a foundation of ethics and detecting flaws in a moral compass?

Super important post! Many people are applying frameworks from their narrative to what is happening in Israel when it just doesn’t apply.

Wow. What a list, Mason. Questioning our biases is so important...and hard! It's taken me years to recognize some of my biases and I'm still working on uncovering others. I suppose it's a lifelong pursuit.
