Building Confidence: The Foundation of Powerful Public Speaking

Confidence is the cornerstone of impactful public speaking, separating charismatic speakers from the rest yet often cited as a major stumbling block for many people stepping on stage.

But what if I told you that confidence in public speaking is not an innate trait but a skill that can be honed through deliberate practice and self-awareness?

Because it is!

In our conversation, Hannah explained that some of the most common confidence barriers in public speaking come from struggling to articulate thoughts concisely, self-doubt, fear of judgement.

If that sounds like you, this next part is GOLD.

In order to overcome these confidence hurdles- particularly around articulation- Hannah has her clients practice by recording and analyzing themselves.?

Here’s how:

  1. ?Start by recording yourself describing your job and its impact in a clear, concise manner?
  2. Review and analyze your ‘mini’ self presentation
  3. From there, identify areas for improvement?
  4. With your newfound self-awareness, practice more intentionally?

Try it for yourself and see how it builds confidence in your communication skills over time.

It really all comes down to self-awareness; understanding your strengths and weaknesses allows you to catch yourself, make improvements, practice deliberately and play to your strengths in presentations.

If you say, 'I want to overcome my fear of judgement', that's great. But if you don't take action on it, nothing will change. (Hannah Michelotti)

Judgement Paralysis: Overcoming Fear in Public Speaking

The fear of judgement keeps many of us stuck, playing small and limiting our full expression.

However, overcoming this fear is non-negotiable if you want to reach your full potential as a speaker.?

The first step is acknowledging the presence of judgement and the fear of being judged. It’s only when we acknowledge this reality that we can move through the fear by pinpointing specific aspects of your presentation that trigger negative emotion.

From there, you can come up with strategies to address or reframe them as an opportunity for growth.

Once you know the thoughts and emotions that are at play, it’s key to take action because if you don’t nothing will change.?

Overcoming the fear of judgement requires self-acceptance, reframing judgement and proactive steps towards improvement.

You are never just presenting informaiton- you are persuading your audience to do something. If you can isolate what that is, you are going to be more successful when you speak. (Hannah Michelotti)

Crafting Compelling Presentations: Structure and Storytelling

A well-structured presentation is like a roadmap guiding your audience towards understanding and action.?

First off, research shows that for presentations under 60 minutes, it’s best to stick to the rule of three—presenting no more than three main points—to ensure clarity and retention.?

Clearly state these main points upfront, and reiterate them throughout the presentation for emphasis.

On top of that, a well-crafted introduction and conclusion begin and end your presentation with impact. The introduction should grab the audience's attention and establish credibility, while the conclusion should inspire the audience to take action.

Let’s also not forget the art of storytelling to add depth and emotion to your presentation.

Humans connect through emotion which is why it’s so critical to incorporate personal anecdotes and metaphors into your presentation.?

Your stories can foster connection with your audience and create a relatable narrative that resonates long after the presentation ends.?

Remember, a compelling presentation isn't just about conveying information; it's about inspiring action and leaving a lasting impression.

You want to make sure you are coiffed and dressed in a way that is appropriate for your industry so that you are perceived as credible when you speak. (Hannah Michelotti)

The Power of Image: Dressing for Credibility and Connection

Your image plays a critical role in your credibility as a speaker and shaping your audience's perception.

Dressing appropriately for your industry and audience fosters trust and professionalism. Just as we trust a dentist in scrubs more than one in casual attire, dressing professionally reinforces your expertise and sincerity as a speaker.?

However, authenticity should not be sacrificed for conformity.?

Finding a balance between a professional image and personal style not only elevates your presence but also establishes genuine connections with your audience.

The key is to feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing because this translates into a more confident and impactful delivery.?

When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you sound good.

When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you sound good. (Hannah Michelotti)

Now what?

Becoming an effective public speaker is a journey of self-discovery and growth.

By cultivating confidence, overcoming fear, crafting compelling presentations, and embracing your authentic image, you can captivate audiences and have a meaningful impact on individuals, teams and organizations.?

It’s up to you to tap into your full potential as a confident and compelling speaker so step onto the stage, own your narrative, and let your voice be heard.?

The world is waiting for you.
