Your Mindsets: Essential to Your Success

Setting Yourself Up for Success in 2024
Your mindset collates the various facets of your values, beliefs, emotions, and habits into a mosaic that establishes your assumptions, attitudes, expectations, perspectives, and perceptions regarding how you see your world, life, work, circumstances, and well-being.
According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, there are two essential mindsets: fixed and growth. A fixed mindset is “believing your qualities are carved in stone,” while a growth mindset is “the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts.”
Thus, a person with a fixed mindset is reluctant to try something new, especially if viewed as challenging. For example, a person has the mindset that they can’t sing. They will believe that people who sing are born with talent. Meanwhile, a person with a growth mindset may take singing lessons and learn that their singing improved significantly to the point they joined a local choir.
A person with a fixed mindset may be envious of successful people. They lack self-confidence and have self-doubts about their ability to succeed. They are less likely to have the motivation to examine their strengths and weaknesses and take action to enhance their strengths and mitigate or strengthen their weaknesses.
A person with a growth mindset, however, is willing to accept challenges. They want to learn and grow. They believe they can be successful and are not afraid to try. Furthermore, they are not afraid of failure; if they encounter setbacks, they seek to learn from their experiences. They embrace the concept of lifelong learning. They are willing to reflect and accept their accountability. They believe that their talents can be developed and maximized through hard work.
Your mindsets are helpful. They help you distill and simplify what you observe in your life and work. They reduce the complexity of what you see into manageable chunks of information that lead to your perception and perspective of the current situation. You may think all politicians are corrupt and in it for fame and money. This mindset leads to the expectation that they can’t be trusted or believed.
It is important to understand that you can have multiple mindsets. For example, you may have a fixed mindset that you can’t swim, and there is no reason to try. In contrast, you can have a growth mindset in cooking. You believe you have a talent for being a chef, are creative and innovative with menus, accept feedback about what is being valued, and are motivated to keep learning and improving.

You must identify your mindsets because they frame the world in which you live and work. Do you have a mindset that if you fail at something, you’ll stop trying and do something else? Or do you believe you can find a solution and keep going? Do you lack confidence in your skills and abilities? Do you have the mindset that you hate getting up in the morning and going to work?
Remember, your mindsets establish your expectations, which translate into making choices and taking action. This requires hitting the delete key to the mindset that you don’t have the talent, the skills, the energy, or the motivation to succeed. Or that you are a victim and will never have a chance because of your circumstances.
The critical point is that your mindsets are not set in stone. They can be changed. When you embrace a growth or success mindset, you open your world to ever-expanding possibilities and opportunities. You can achieve a meaningful and purposeful personal and professional life.
