Is Your Mindset in the Right Place?
Natalie Gingrich
I certify and mentor operations professionals with project management expertise to become Directors of Operations.
Your mindset is a huge part of how (and if) you evolve into your next best self. You’ve heard the quote from Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” And it’s so true.
Our mindset impacts everything we do in business, from how we show up to sales calls to our pricing to how and when we uplevel our services or business practices. And it’s something that we need to work on continually; it’s not a “check-the-box” activity.
I still struggle with my own mindset from time to time, and I’d guess that you do too. The work doesn’t end, but if we recognize where we’re blocked it’s easier for us to pull out of it so we can keep moving forward.
Because I recognize this, I wanted to bring some mindset work into the Director of Operations program. And I also knew that I wasn’t the right person to do that work with our students.
Years ago, I met an amazing business owner whose interests and work really aligned with mine. We had similar skill sets and at the time we did similar work with clients, her as an online business manager and me as a director of operations. But what really stood out to me about her was her mindset work.
Melissa Froelich’s work in mindset is so impressive. It’s consistent and ongoing, and that matters. So much so that she is our mindset coach in the DOO program so our students can benefit from her expertise.
On a recent podcast episode, Melissa and I talked about the importance of mindset as a service provider working to become your next best self. Things like the language you use when talking (and thinking!) about your offers, how you look at your pricing, the curiosity you have when approaching a project, the authenticity with which you show up for your work, the words you use when you talk about what you do…these all matter when it comes to your mindset as an operator.
Mindset shows up differently for us all based on who we are and our lived experiences, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t or shouldn’t do the work. It’s not easy, but it is necessary.
A big piece of mindset work is tapping into curiosity. You know, all the questions we ask so we can gather the information we need to do our best work with clients and inside our own businesses. According to Melissa, it’s the strongest ingredient for mindset work. This means that us operators are already a step ahead!
If mindset work hasn’t been on your priority list, it’s time. Especially if you’re ready for your next best self. Listen in to this episode.
