Your *Millennial Mindset

Your *Millennial Mindset

*not an age thing!

I'd love to know who you think in your network fits this profile so please tag away. We're going to be working more closely with as many Millennial-mindsetters going into 2020 and to add as much value as I can I'd love to grow my network in this and your direction. Please help by tagging someone who you think ticks these boxes described below. Oh yes did I mention I found something out which means it's NOT about when they were born.

Attributes of a Millennial Mindset

Sense of Self ..

A sense of self is defined as one's perception of oneself and an awareness of who you truly are. Each person's sense of self is directly related to how they feel about themselves, their levels of self-esteem, and their confidence or lack thereof. It lays the foundation for all other aspects and elements in our lives.

You have a strong sense of self- in the way you expect:

  • Your personal development interwoven into everything you make and do;
  • You seek to demonstrate your own values aligned to the work you do; and
  • You develop relationships collaborating with others building trust and learning.

.. part of a 2-way Dialogue

A dialogue is a cooperative, two-way conversation. The goal is for participants to exchange information and build relationships with one another which may be to share an understanding towards solving a problem. A dialogue is not a debate, nor a discourse or diatribe which are less collaborative types of conversation.

You seek to be working in an organisation that:

  • Encourages a 2-way dialogue not dissimilar to your relationships outside work;
  • Is less about the hierarchy and more about the best team to get the job done; and
  • Has a clear sense of purpose which you passionately believe is a force for good.

Where I'd started

The best research for me is where I get to trawl, muse, compare and contrast excellent research and be pushed to taking my own view which becomes a conversation topic. I like to start with the facts of the matter and in this case the term appears to be most widely associated with the year in which your Millennial arrived into the world along with other periods:

  • Baby Boomers: Born 1946-1964;
  • Generation X: Born 1965-1980;
  • Millennials: Born 1981-1996; and
  • Post-Millennials: Born 1997-Present.

So here's the thing .. I didn't initially realise the significance of the addition of the mindset word and when I did it became a much more interesting task. If you believe, as I do, mindset sits pretty much at the centre of all that you make, do and think then seeing it as more than a 'when were you born' physical attribute appealed much more in what I could make of it. My end game here is better understanding the direction of travel for the world of work and so a natural follow on from my pieces on the Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends survey.

What this means

I'm reminded that I love the whole idea that mindsets are a 'thing' we can define and relate to the way we approach life, work and pretty much our whole outlook. By delving and understanding more to connect to the work we do I can better relate to those who work with us. I can see how they can forge strong relationships when they align and cause frustration and confusion when they don't. I love you can maybe have a few mindsets which come to the fore and slip into the background as and when to fit your environment and maybe your mood. More of this to come and thanks for reading this far. My ask is you tag your favourite millennial as a comment on this post so I can learn and grow my network as a result,
