Your Methane Mitigation Insights...

Last week, over 250 people gathered in Houston for the Methane Mitigation America Summit, coming together to collaborate on the vital knowledge and solutions needed to successfully integrate improved methane management practices within operations. With speakers from the likes of Phillips 66, California Resources Corporation, Duke Energy, Gulfport Energy and Oxy, the summit provided attendees with an extremely valuable experience. Thank you to all those who joined us - we hope to see you again soon!

Carbon Mapper recently shared 400+ methane & CO2 plumes using data from the Carbon Mapper Coalition satellite, Planet's Tanager-1! This data is already driving real-world action, like a recent fix in the Permian Basin where they detected a major leak—now fully mitigated.

This first verified methane mitigation action adds to existing evidence that when decision makers are empowered with data on the exact sources of emissions, they can effectively prioritize actions that cut waste and eliminate methane. Carbon Mapper has conducted in several pilot airborne surveys in U.S. states, including California and Colorado. (Source: Carbon Mapper)

A large methane plume from a leaking oil and gas pipeline was detected in the Texas Permian Basin by Tanager-1 on Oct. 9. After being shared with federal and state agencies, the leak was voluntarily fixed by the operator

This news comes as a few days ago, GHGSAT announced its plans to near-double its constellation of methane-sensing satellites by the end of 2026. This sharp growth will allow GHGSat’s pioneering constellation—already the world’s largest collection of satellites?dedicated to monitoring greenhouse gases—to revisit industrial sites to detect methane emissions on a daily cadence around the world, unlocking a level of detail about methane emissions and their sources that was previously unimaginable. And focusing on the news in Europe, the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, recently used his first public address at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, to make the case that the UK must act on climate change and nature loss as some of the greatest long-term threats faced. At the summit, he announced the UK’s new nationally determined contribution to tackling the climate crisis, with a 2035 target to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions by at least 81% on 1990 levels, calling on other countries to match that ambition to limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees. (Source for the above: GOV.UK)

Even though the UK doesn't have it's own regulation, is clear from the Prime Minister's address at COP29 that there is lots of work to be done to meet future climate goals, in methane emissions reduction and beyond.

Listen: OLADE’s Role in Driving Methane Mitigation in Latin America

The Methane Mitigation Summit Series has welcomed hundreds of the oil and gas industry’s leading professionals from across the globe since December 2022.

Action on methane is of the most effective steps the energy sector can take to mitigate climate change. Global methane emissions from fossil fuel operations increased by close to 5% in 2021. Under the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, total methane emissions from fossil fuel operations must fall by around 75% between 2020 and 2030. Rapidly reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector is essential and companies must look to maximize methane mitigation strategies while meeting the global demand for affordable and reliable oil and natural gas.

With insights from the world's leading oil and gas operators, NGOs, academics, government representatives, and more, the Methane Mitigation Series has seen an immersive exploration of the latest tools, strategies and opportunities for reducing emissions across operations, and quickly become the go-to event for those looking to reduce oil and gas methane emissions.
