This week, COP29 kicks off in Baku, Azerbaijan. A key focus of COP29 will be on finance, as trillions of dollars are required for countries to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect lives and livelihoods from the worsening impact of climate change. The conference will also be a key moment for countries to present their updated national climate action plans under the Paris agreement, which are due by early 2025. (Source: United Nations)

Another major topic is the US presidential election, and despite uncertainty, many associations and operators have stood firm in their climate commitments. A statement from Clean Air Task Force's (CATF) Executive Director, Armond Cohen, says: "Clean energy, innovation, clean air, and climate action are broadly popular across the country, and they can and must progress." The Executive Director adds CATF will 'defend gains made, assess the changed landscape, and find new ways of moving progress forward, with allies across the political and business spectrum'. In another response made by the American Exploration & Production Council, they say: "Consistent with our Climate Policy and Principles, AXPC companies believe collaboration amongst policy makers and industry partners is needed to find solutions that will meaningfully drive down emissions, while allowing US independent producers to meet the global demand for affordable and reliable oil and natural gas." In the last few days, Commonwealth LNG and Kimmeridge Texas Gas (KTG) recently announced their time-bound commitment to obtaining MiQ certification for their natural gas operations, potentially setting a new standard for transparency and reduced emissions in the industry. The decision to certify reflects the global rise in demand for transparent, low-emission LNG, especially with new EU regulations becoming operationalized in 2025. In other news, the OIES Gas Research Programme this week shared key takeaways from their recent presentation 'The Impact of the EU Methane Regulation on LNG Contracts', part of the 'Methane Emissions: EU Methane Regulation & Consequences for LNG' webinar.

Key takeaways concluded that the EU Methane Regulation is having a tangible impact on LNG sales to the EU, with buyers starting to take steps to ensure that their contracts comply with new regulatory requirements, the lack of a direct contractual relationship between importers and producers can have significant consequences, particularly in cases where sellers are unable to meet commitments that are beyond their control, and more. View all the key takeaways here. (Source: OIES Gas Research Programme)

OIES Research Fellow, Maria Olczak, will be participating in the panel, 'Navigating The Intersection of Energy Security and Emissions Reduction: EU Import Requirements, What Do They Mean?' at the upcoming Methane Mitigation Europe Summit. To find out more, visit the website here.

The Methane Mitigation Summit Series has welcomed hundreds of the oil and gas industry’s leading professionals from across the globe since December 2022.

Action on methane is of the most effective steps the energy sector can take to mitigate climate change. Global methane emissions from fossil fuel operations increased by close to 5% in 2021. Under the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, total methane emissions from fossil fuel operations must fall by around 75% between 2020 and 2030. Rapidly reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector is essential and companies must look to maximize methane mitigation strategies while meeting the global demand for affordable and reliable oil and natural gas.

With insights from the world's leading oil and gas operators, NGOs, academics, government representatives, and more, the Methane Mitigation Series has seen an immersive exploration of the latest tools, strategies and opportunities for reducing emissions across operations, and quickly become the go-to event for those looking to reduce oil and gas methane emissions.
