Marketing should be your new sales strategy...and after reading this brief article. I am going to make you a marketing believer.

My name is Mena and I used to be the most hardcore sales person you can ever imagine. Staying up until 4 am cold calling clients across the globe to get them to close using all kinds of sales tactics under the sun. And due to sheer force and willpower, I somehow managed to get clients to close if they showed any sign of interest in the services or products I was selling. This strategy, unfortunately, reaffirmed my belief that in business all that matters is hardcore sales strategies because they are what makes the revenue. Moreover, marketing to me was just a ''necessity''. Something that just had to be done so your competitors and customers see you are up to the standard. I know...I know...that was dumb.

Forward 4 years later, in my current work, I rely on all kinds of marketing tools & channels to help redirect potential customers to our websites where the customers navigate through the services and products they want. Once they have chosen what they want, the customers use automated processes to purchase their services and download all the information required to start using those services or products. This dramatic shift to relying on marketing and digital without human salesy interactions helped me understand one thing. Marketing is the king of sales. In fact, I would even go as far as to say that there will be a time in the next 10 years where sales-only jobs will be obsolete.

Think about this for a second. Has Starbucks ever tried to call you up and sell you anything? Fine, I get it. It's not that kind of business. What about the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai. Have they ever called you to sell you a night in their rooms? Do you want me to keep providing examples? Fine. Louis Vuitton? Rolex? Heck....Apple has your phone number and they never call you to sell you anything. So what does this mean? It means that brands who have made a true "brand name" for themselves have been smart enough to think like marketers from the beginning and as they grow they realize the power of being effective marketers as opposed to sales people. They might send you emails through a newsletter that you signed up for and they might get your attention indirectly. But they will never come to you directly and sell you anything.

Heck.... Apple has your phone number and they never call you to sell you anything.

So what does this mean? Does it mean that we should stop sales activities as a whole? Great question Mr. and Mrs. Audience. The answer is this: sales people that are in sales related industries such as real estate and software services need to start thinking like marketers and use the power of digital to convey their messages indirectly in order to create brands out of their companies. For example, if you are a business owner then have your sales people create TikTok accounts and share moments with the customers they serve. Or have your sales people create educational videos on LinkedIn about your products and services.

sales people that are in sales related industries such as real estate and software services need to start thinking like marketers and use the power of digital to convey their messages indirectly in order to create brands out of their companies.

The activities of marketing are also how you create engaged communities which is the entire goal of marketing, to create customers who are engaged and loyal to the brand. In addition, Community members, unlike customers, are die hard fans who truly believe in the brand and will stay loyal and determined to acquire your services and products because they feel connected to the company. Once you can truly say this about your "Customers", you are now on the way to building a true brand. And with consistency, I believe any business that provides a unique product or service can become like Apple or Starbucks by building communities that represent the brand for the long-term.
