Forget about bamboo ceilings or glass ceilings for a moment. Your manager is the ceiling of your career.

  • If your manager doesn't believe that you are ready for a promotion, it's almost certain you won't get it no matter how much you believe you are ready.
  • If they don't champion your work, your senior leaders won't know about your name and your ability.
  • If you can't learn anything from your manager anymore, it might be time to move on even if your manager is the nicest person.

The good news is that it's not that hard to find a better manager. Great leaders exist, you will just have to find them. Find a leader who cares about you, mentors you and advocates for you.

Indeed! Further, in my experiences, effective managers excel at managing their team members' growth aspirations versus micro-managing the day-to-day often disguised as active involvement.???
