For example, many different methods are available for stream transport protocol protection, like those using forward error correction and these protocols are competing in how they optimize security versus latency. Simplified it can be described that higher latency allows more time to recover lost packets. In very unstable networks, like the internet, IP packets are frequently lost between the encoder and the decoder causing video interrupts and audio glitches. In this instance the decoder requests a packet to be resent. This request and resend requires time, thus increasing latency. It now comes back to the algorithm to optimize overall latency by detecting a packet loss, resending the missing packet and efficiently recovering the video stream. To do that all, buffering is required, which finally adds latency to the overall contribution link. The cleverness of managing buffer, detection and resends is used to optimize the stability and overall latency.

To do live content contribution over the internet, adaptive buffer planning & constant latency monitoring are required to support the underlying transport technology.
