Your lifestyle can be your medicine

Change your lifestyle. That can be your medicine.

This is an unlikely post from a leadership coach. But, I am writing this as I am passionate about fitness and living right.

Most people I know, irrespective of age, be it in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s seem to have some health issues or the other. I think all of it is due to their unhealthy lifestyle.

-       People work round the clock and it has gotten worse with ‘work from home’ prevalent now due to covid virus.

-       People consume lots of junk food that has high calories with zero nutritional value. The body craves for nutrition and you start feeling hungry and then you end up eating more junk food. The cycle continues.

-        People swiggy restaurant food that may not be freshly cooked.

-       People can’t find time for exercise or don’t get enough exercise.

-       They spend too much time with their mobile phones, watch too much TV or Netflix.

All of these lifestyle habits lead to lifestyle related chronic ailments like obesity and Type – 2 diabetes. However, the list of ailments does not end here. The other lifestyle related ailments that one can face and whose negative effects are under-estimated and not well understood yet are stress, lack of sleep, anxiousness, mental health issues and infections. All of these can lead to other chronic illnesses like blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and worse things.

I think for a healthy life, one must begin with basics, or go back to the basics. Work towards making changes in the lifestyle. I think that is the best medicine.

So, where to begin?

The following changes once incorporated into our life can improve fitness.

  1. Sleep on time and wake up early. That Netflix serial is not running away. You can continue tomorrow from where you left.

2. Get the daily dose of workout. It can be a simple walk or a workout in the gym, what ever your prefer. But, do it atleast 4 days in a week. On the other 3 days, do something that takes lesser time – may be some floor exercises or climbing some stairs for about 20 minutes, for which you don’t have to leave your house, or wear special clothes and shoes or would need any special equipment. It should be a anytime, anywhere exercise – may be yoga, push ups or planking.

3. Eat right. Depending on your age, weight and other health conditions which you will know after a thorough blood check up, switch to low carb foods and avoid processed sugar. This change has helped several people lose weight and inches, without having to feel tired and food deprived. Plus, you will feel higher levels of energy. Say NO to junk food, any food that comes in a box and carbonated sweet drinks.

In my opinion, the medicine to almost all ailments is in eating right and in practicing a healthy lifestyle. That is why, I think your lifestyle can be your medicine.
