If Your Life Ended Today...

If Your Life Ended Today...

In one of my final years at school, our end of year presentation night was held at the local hall. I remember exactly where I was sitting in the audience that night.

As part of the programming, they had a guest speaker and as I listened to how they told their story, I remember feeling inspired and believing that even though I grew up in such a remote part of the world, if I put in the work, anything was possible.

As I sat there, I thought to myself I’d love to do that one day, where I’d have the opportunity to share my own story in a way that inspired others.

More than 15 years later in July 2017, I had just spent 3 months in the Colombian wilderness, filming waterfalls, beaches and untouched rainforest.

I flew to Argentina where I had stumbled across a beautiful apartment online with a concert grade grand piano in the living room.

I thought that would be perfect for creating the soundtrack for this nature video I’d just filmed.

In the first week I recorded the soundtrack along with a number of other songs, and the strangest thing happened.

I was laying on my bed in the apartment one day and out of nowhere, this question popped into my head:

‘If your life ended today, what do you wish you’d done that you didn’t get around to?’

For me it was such a powerful question because I had my answer right away.

You see I had this elusive dream of giving a talk with a grand piano on stage.

I had been speaking & coaching for a number of years by then, written hundreds of songs about life, death and everything in between, but still hadn’t found a way of bringing these two sides of me together into a single experience.

I came so close in 2015 when I was booked for a talk, grand piano on stage and two days before the event, the conference was cancelled.

I was crushed and doubted if I’d ever make it happen.

That day in Argentina though, something switched in me…

‘If your life ended today, what do you wish you’d done that you didn’t get around to?’

Immediately for me it was delivering a talk with a grand piano on stage.

I said to myself ‘Cam, if you really want this, go and make it happen’.

Over and over and over again, I spoke with anyone in my network that would listen and eventually, I had a conversation with a meeting planner who had a 700 person event coming up, along with the faith in me to deliver a remarkable experience.

I’ll never forget the day I stood in front of those 700 people, grand piano on stage with me and for the first time ever, I experienced that elusive dream.?

What I realized is that the outcomes we experience largely come down to the beliefs we have about what’s possible, the decisions we make and the actions we take (or don’t take).

Beliefs +?Decisions +?Actions =?Outcomes

Through all the ups and downs, twists and turns, the question I asked myself in Argentina that day continues to help me focus on the things that really matter.

So now I ask you,?if your life ended today, what do you wish you had done that you didn’t get around to??

And more importantly, now that you know, what are you going to do to make it a reality?

CA.

I asked myself exactly this question about three years ago. And the answer was that I would wish that I'd shared more of what I'd learned with more people. I know that people responded well to my coaching and advice, but I also realised that a 1-to-1 approach would lessen my impact. So I cleared the kitchen table and filled it with little bits of paper (my version of a mind map). I concluded that what I needed to do was write a book. It took me two more years to complete the research and a further year to finish writing. When I got distracted, I'd keep going back to the core question. Finally, in April this year, I completed The Emotional Overdraft - a book written to help founders and leaders who subsidise the success of their business at the cost of their own mental and physical health. Now I'm dealing with the frustrations of publishing, where everything seems to slow down. But I have a publication date (23rd January 2024) and a cover. So we are grinding forward. I'm so glad I did the exercise - I'd recommend it to others. Thanks for the thought provoking article Cameron Atlas

‘If your life ended today, what do you wish you’d done that you didn’t get around to?’ What does it say about me if I don't have an answer? At least - there is no career win or accomplishment I seek. I wish to see my children grow and become humans full of empathy, gratitude, and integrity. If today was my last day - I would miss that wonderful experience, but otherwise, I reckon I could travel more?
