Is your learning and development a cost or an investment?

Is your learning and development a cost or an investment?

You spend some money delivering learning and development stuff.

Is it a cost or an investment?

If there is no learning transfer, and the learner does nothing differently, then it's a cost.

If there is learning transfer and the learner does some different stuff that is useful, it's an investment.

The Learner chooses.

How can you help your learners choose to do learning transfer?

What do they need from you?

You might start by asking them!

Be clear about what you want them to do, and they will know what they need to do it, and what's stopping them from doing it.

Your learners already know how to turn your cost into an investment.

My best wishes, Paul

Yes, the Learner chooses and people are responsible for their own learning. I’ve seen many individuals cheat themselves through college and get as little learning out of the experience too. Many leaders don’t believe me when I explain training isn’t always the answer. Skill versus will must also be considered.

All to often people are sent on training, even when the ask for it, without a purpose back at work, and seldom a conversation with their supervisor on the aim and objectives of the training or development. Then lack the opportunity to apply their learning. And is a cost at several levels, the actual monetary values paid, the time cost and the longer term engagement costs

Paul Matthews this is so true - that's why we encourage coaching clients and training participants to think about and commit to specific implementation activities for applying their learning and insights on the job. This way they see the impact they can have and embed the learning on a day to day basis. This way the return on investment of training and coaching is visible and felt, not only by the individual but by the business. Thank you for sharing!
