I worked at firm D, where you were not allowed to bring a competitor's products onsite. That made sense. But, some people took it to another level. Even outside of work, they swore the competitor was trash, were loyal to the current employer etc. Yeah, okay. Here's how that goes IRL:
"Mike" has worked at his current firm for 17 years. 4 months ago, his firm "restructured". Mike was voluntold "given" the "opportunity" to be demoted to a different role because his position was eliminated. Mike knows he's one text from being laid off so he's job hunting. Wise.
One of the firms he's considering is a major competitor of his current firm. Mike's kind of a hesitant about applying because they're "the enemy."
I told Mike he needs to update his mindset. The same company that he's been so loyal to is the same company that removed his role, demoted him, and is probably going to terminate him.
There are no friends nor enemies at jobs that aren't ours at companies we don't own: there are only business decisions and interests. It's in the firm's interest to make the business decision to remove Mike.
Mike needs to focus on his #1 job and #1 business: himself. This means pursuing interests and business decisions that benefit him. That means accepting that no firm cares about your professional life more than you need to care about your professional life.
If you don't the own the firm, their enemies and friends are not your enemies nor friends. Don't waste mental energy adopting mantras/beliefs on behalf of firms you don't own.
You owe you to stand for your value. You are your #1 job. That's it.
