The ?? To Your Job Search Story

The ?? To Your Job Search Story

I saw a great post earlier today from Darci Smith, MBA on IG that explained how having a gap on your resume is NOT a bad thing.

And I 100% agree.?

To be honest with you, nothing on your resume is actually a “bad” thing. What is most important is what you include and what you don’t.

The ?? to a great resume is how you clear the clutter, showcase your specific skills & experience, and TELL YOUR STORY.

But most candidates fail to do this and instead want to include all the skills, the successful projects, and every single win they’ve ever received.

It may seem counterintuitive but having EVERYTHING in there will actually water down your story and what you bring to the organization.

So get specific and remember to highlight only the experiences and skills that contribute unique value to both the role and the company you're aiming for.

For example, If you’re applying for a Sales Manager role, choose the best skills to share and the highly relevant experiences to highlight:

Hard Skills

  • CRM Software Proficiency - Hubspot, Asana, Salesforce
  • Unique Product Knowledge and Industry (fintech, SaaS, b2b, b2c)
  • Sales Track Record with Metrics (# of sales, increase in revenue, total sales $)

Soft Skills

  • Leadership and how many people you managed
  • Communication and the different types of stakeholders?
  • Presentation and links to different sales pitches you’ve created

Big Wins

  • Sales Team Management and the total revenue your team brought in
  • Customer Relationship Management and the reviews you received from your clients
  • Business Development and the number of new accounts you opened up last year

The next step is then putting these details into your resume bullet points. Instead of solely focusing on job responsibilities, highlight the tangible outcomes and impact you have achieved in previous roles. Quantify your big wins with specific metrics.

For example:

  • Increased sales revenue by 30% MoM for 6 consecutive months through targeted sales strategies, effective team management, and exceptional customer relationship development.
  • Led a team of 5 sales representatives to consistently meet and exceed monthly and yearly sales targets of $10M by leveraging a data-driven approach and thorough market analysis.

  • Hosted 3 CRM Trainings and onboarded 20+ new hires on the best practices of using Salesforce and tracking key metrics to track performance.

So take a step back the next time you're tempted to include every single detail of your career journey.?

Instead of overwhelming recruiters and hiring managers with an exhaustive list of every detail, it's more effective to craft a captivating story that focuses on pivotal moments and significant achievements.

Clear out the clutter, distill your narrative to its essence, and watch as your success story resonates more powerfully than ever before. ??

Such a good point Sho Dewan! Editing the resume to have targeted information that aligns with the role helps the recruiter and hiring manager clearly see your value. It removes doubts about your ability to perform the role and showcases how you’ll solve problems.
