Is Your Job Boring?
by Vasundhara Sawhney, Senior Editor
Every job can be boring at times. Maybe you’re stuck doing the same task repeatedly. Maybe you’ve mastered your role and find the work uninspiring. Or maybe clearing out your inbox, yet again, feels demotivating. Whatever your job, and however meaningful it might be, there will always be days that feel, well, boring.
Boredom has earned a negative reputation for a reason. When it comes to work, it’s often viewed as a counterproductive state—one that ignites discomfort, desperation for something new, or a desire for the day to end. It’s also linked to burnout, decreased job satisfaction, and increased desire to quit.
While my job isn’t boring, I, too, feel unmotivated on days spent scrolling through endless emails, filling out expense reports, or other repetitive tasks. But, over the years, I’ve also learned this feeling is inevitable, and when handled constructively, can even have an upside.
Recent research shows that boredom might have more to offer us than we think. Many of us live in a state of constant distraction. With work tasks, life responsibilities, and social media feeds competing for our attention, we’ve become overstimulated. Moments of boredom give our brains a short respite, freeing space for us to daydream, tap into our creativity, and think about new ideas. Like most things, boredom has a silver lining.
Here are a few more ways to rethink your feelings about being bored at work.?
