Your Guide to Video Conference Calls

Many people have worked in a home office for some time now, but for others, it may have started about two years ago when the pandemic hit. Since many workers have been able to retain their work-from-home status or are now using a hybrid schedule, I thought it would be an excellent time for a refresher course on how to show up best for your video calls (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).
Prepare Your Backdrop?
If you’ll be broadcasting your actual backdrop, instead of using one provided by your software of choice, be sure to clear the clutter from what is visible on-screen…but don’t just put yourself in front of a blank wall either. Try a simple background of a bookshelf with a few books, or perhaps a table beside you. Use what portrays you and your business in the best way.
Be Aware of Lighting and Sound?
Don’t station yourself directly under overhead lighting or sit right in front of a window. The best lighting comes from a window beside you or a lamp in front of you, off-camera. For sound, being in a room with carpeting or window treatments will help to absorb any ambient noise and stave off an undesirable echo.?
Turn Off Email Notifications
Your customers or colleagues aren’t interested in seeing or hearing that someone else is communicating with you during the session. Turn off these notifications to give your audience 100 percent of your attention.
Become a Master Muter
Always be aware of when you are muted and when you can be heard. One of the biggest issues with these calls is being on mute while speaking, so nobody can hear the brilliant things you’re sharing. Take note of your mute status at all times so they won’t miss a word (and you won’t have to repeat it). Conversely, be sure to mute your line when your dog continues to bark or when you sneeze or cough loudly.

Set Up Your Webcam and Look at the Camera
If your camera is below eye level, it will show you looking down, which will not be the best angle. You don’t want people to get an up-your-nose view! To fix that, set your laptop on top of a few books. The best angle to see you is at (or slightly above) eye level.
Be Conscious of Your Wardrobe
Sweatpants are comfortable; just be sure they won’t be seen on camera. Solid black, white, or heavily patterned shirts can also cause problems when your camera is adjusting, so you may want to steer clear of those. Stay away from distracting or noisy jewelry, and if you usually wear glasses, be aware of how they may be reflecting light and adjust things accordingly.?
When working at home, choosing a quiet space with limited background noise, proper lighting, and neat attire minimizes distractions and helps concentration. Using the tips shared here will make your video conference calls look more professional.?
