Last week, we spent most of the week inside. Overnight temperatures hovered around -20°F overnight with a high of around -5°F during the day. above is a screenshot I took on Saturday morning around 11am as it 'warmed up' to -11°F from -21°F earlier in the day.
It's been cold to say the least.
As I looked at the ice accumulating at the bottom of our front doorframe, I wondered if there were any ways that people could save money on heating costs when it's this cold.
Here's what I found:
1. Optimize Your Heating System:
Tip: Schedule regular maintenance for your heating system to keep it running efficiently.
2. Seal Drafts and Insulate:
Tip: Hunt down drafts around windows and doors; seal them up to keep the cold out.
3. Use Energy-Efficient Appliances:
Tip: Upgrade to ENERGY STAR-rated appliances; they're real energy champs.
·??????? ENERGY STAR-rated appliances meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While they may have a slightly higher upfront cost, they pay off in long-term energy savings.
·??????? Look for the ENERGY STAR label when purchasing heating equipment, lighting, and other appliances.

4. Adjust Thermostat Settings:
Tip: Lower the thermostat a bit when you're away or snuggled under blankets.

5. Take Advantage of Natural Heat:
Tip: Open those curtains during the day to let the sun work its magic.
6. Unplug Unused Electronics:
Tip: Unplug gadgets when not in use; they love to sneakily sip on power.
7. Be Mindful of Water Heating:
Tip: Lower the water heater temperature a bit; your wallet will thank you.
8. Cook Efficiently:
Tip: Use smaller appliances like slow cookers; they're energy-saving superheroes.
9. Manage Heat When You're Away:
Tip: Set your thermostat lower when you're out; no need to heat an empty home.
10. Optimal Home Temperature:
Tip: Aim for around 68°F (20°C) when you're home; it's comfy and efficient.
So, there you have it – your winter heating savings playbook. Remember, it's the little changes that add up to big savings.
