Your Guide to Saving Money on Heating Costs This Winter

Your Guide to Saving Money on Heating Costs This Winter

Last week, we spent most of the week inside. Overnight temperatures hovered around -20°F overnight with a high of around -5°F during the day. above is a screenshot I took on Saturday morning around 11am as it 'warmed up' to -11°F from -21°F earlier in the day.

It's been cold to say the least.

As I looked at the ice accumulating at the bottom of our front doorframe, I wondered if there were any ways that people could save money on heating costs when it's this cold.

Here's what I found:

1. Optimize Your Heating System:

Tip: Schedule regular maintenance for your heating system to keep it running efficiently.

  • A well-maintained heating system operates more efficiently, ensuring it doesn't have to work overtime to keep your home warm.
  • Regular check-ups, filter replacements, and addressing any issues promptly can contribute to substantial energy savings.

2. Seal Drafts and Insulate:

Tip: Hunt down drafts around windows and doors; seal them up to keep the cold out.

  • Drafts and poor insulation can lead to significant heat loss. Check for gaps around windows, doors, and other openings, and use weather stripping or caulk to seal them.
  • Consider adding insulation to your attic and walls to create a thermal barrier, preventing heat from escaping.

3. Use Energy-Efficient Appliances:

Tip: Upgrade to ENERGY STAR-rated appliances; they're real energy champs.

·??????? ENERGY STAR-rated appliances meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While they may have a slightly higher upfront cost, they pay off in long-term energy savings.

·??????? Look for the ENERGY STAR label when purchasing heating equipment, lighting, and other appliances.

4. Adjust Thermostat Settings:

Tip: Lower the thermostat a bit when you're away or snuggled under blankets.

5. Take Advantage of Natural Heat:

Tip: Open those curtains during the day to let the sun work its magic.

  • Sunlight is free and efficient. Open curtains and blinds during the day to let natural warmth in, and close them at night to retain heat.
  • Proper window coverings can also contribute to insulation, reducing heat loss.

6. Unplug Unused Electronics:

Tip: Unplug gadgets when not in use; they love to sneakily sip on power.

7. Be Mindful of Water Heating:

Tip: Lower the water heater temperature a bit; your wallet will thank you.

  • Water heating can account for a significant portion of your energy bills. Lowering the water heater temperature reduces energy consumption without sacrificing comfort.
  • Consider insulating your water heater and pipes to further minimize heat loss.

8. Cook Efficiently:

Tip: Use smaller appliances like slow cookers; they're energy-saving superheroes.

9. Manage Heat When You're Away:

Tip: Set your thermostat lower when you're out; no need to heat an empty home.

10. Optimal Home Temperature:

Tip: Aim for around 68°F (20°C) when you're home; it's comfy and efficient.

So, there you have it – your winter heating savings playbook. Remember, it's the little changes that add up to big savings.

Can't wait to check this out. In Maine -20 was the standard February temp, but in PA with these low temperatures I just KNOW our oil fill up is coming soon!
