Your guide to finding part-time work while studying at the University of Westminster

Many of our students tell us they are interested in finding part-time employment to support themselves financially during their studies. The process of starting a part-time job in addition to your studies can seem more long-winded than it is. Whether this would be your first job or you bring some experience to the table, let this guide help you navigate the world of part-time work.

Aside from the obvious benefits of earning extra income, you should consider working while studying for many other reasons, such as:?

  • developing transferable skills,??
  • becoming more confident and??
  • gaining work experience to help you with your graduate employability.??

Searching for your first part-time role, as well as preparing your CV and getting ready to apply, can be a bit overwhelming. So, why not let me help you with this article that breaks down what part-time work is and three ways of finding your perfect part-time job if you study at the University of Westminster.?

Why am I telling you about this?

My name is Anna and I got my first full-time job here at the University one month after graduation in 2018. You might be asking yourself how or assuming I was lucky. Long story short, I got my first post-graduation job so soon because I had worked as a part-time student helper since the first year of my studies. And I got my part-time student helper role thanks to various ad-hoc part-time jobs I undertook during my first year in London and the year before starting my undergraduate studies. Wondering how you could also go about this? Read on and let me save you hours of research.

What is part-time work??

Your type of employment is determined by the number of hours you work for a company in a week, resulting in different requirements and benefits. According to gov.uk, a part-time worker is “someone who works fewer hours than a full-time worker” which would usually mean working less than 35-40 hours per week. As a student at the University of Westminster, you are allowed to work up to twenty hours per week (this also counts towards the twenty hours in an international student’s visa work allowance). Some example part-time jobs include events and hospitality work, being a nanny, a delivery driver or a barista. As a Westminster student, you can also work as a student helper at one of our campuses or remotely. As one example, here in the Careers and Employability Service team, we regularly recruit students to help us with administrative work, as well as social media and content creation.
