Your Guide to Creating A Harassment Free Workplace

The Rules Are? Changing

We're talking about sexual harassment in work, it's time to put a stop to it!.

You need to level up your workplace game. New rules are in town from October 24, and they're not messing around.

The Key Legal Changes

  • Preventative Duty: you will have a legal duty to take "reasonable steps" to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.
  • Increased Penalties: If you don't take reasonable steps tribunals can increase awards by up to 25% .
  • Third-Party Harassment: The duty to protect workers against harassment by third parties is not coming in but you are still expected to take reasonable steps to prevent harassment in work from anyone including customers, clients, and members of the public.

What's the Deal?

Basically, you've got to be a total pro at creating a safe and respectful workplace. No more letting creepy comments and unwanted attention slide. It's time to be a leader that your team can actually look up to.

What Do You Need to Do?

  1. Lay Down the Law: Create a crystal-clear policy on sexual harassment. Make sure everyone knows what's not acceptable and what the consequences are for breaking the rules.
  2. Train Your Troops: Educate your team on what sexual harassment is and why it's a big no-no. Help them understand their rights and responsibilities.
  3. Build a Bridge: Make it easy for your team to report any issues. Create a confidential reporting system and make sure everyone knows how to use it.
  4. Investigate Like a Pro: If someone comes forward with a complaint, take it seriously. Investigate thoroughly and take appropriate action.
  5. Create a Culture of Respect: Foster a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. Lead by example and show your team that you mean business when it comes to preventing harassment.

I love your second point about educating your team. I think that, increasingly, behaviour and speech is being called out nowadays (rightly so) that might have been tolerated in the past. In workplaces that have potentially five generations of employees working together, regular training is a must. No-one wants a Donald Flump in their team with his 'banter'.
