Your generation affects your working behavior more than you think!

Your generation affects your working behavior more than you think!

Many believe that the “generation phenomena” is just myths and half-truths. However, according to an investigation done by different experts in the recruiting industry, there are some interesting facts that you can’t deny regarding how sure generations behave when it comes to their professional life.

Before going any further, I would like to point out that these facts have been determined with data from a regular sample of professionals that use internet portals to find jobs. They are from different parts of the world, but most are distributed in the Americas. It is also important to mention that most professionals in this study were in the job market from 2010 to 2021.?

Let us jump right into the exciting data we have gathered for you today without further ado.

Did you know that there are patterns of hiring and resignations?

January, for example, is not only the first month of the year but also the month of changes for Generation X and Baby Boomers. In their case, most of them start to look for new positions during those months, and they resign from their jobs most commonly during this period.

However, when it comes to Millennials and Generation Z, they do quite the opposite. Adults in this demographic tend to be more reticent when changing jobs in the early months of the year. For them, July and August are the best months to change. The reason? There is no clear pattern besides that they tend to use their “in-between jobs” to vacation or rest in a different place.

However, it is common for Generation X and Baby Boomers to quit their jobs during October due to the importance of their holidays with their families. It is pretty rare, but when it does, it is more common during this period.?

Each Generation has a way of understanding the workplace that significantly differs.

Another exciting part of the study was how each generation thinks their perfect workplace should be. For Generation Z, for example, teamwork is less attractive than it is for Generation X and Millennials. Most Zoomers prefer jobs related to IT as they tend to require sole focus rather than huge meetings. Generation X is quite the opposite; they love to work in fields such as education, HR, and marketing, as they tend to love the good vibe and the necessary and thriving communication within those fields.

According to the research, these mentalities also apply to industries and leadership styles. Remote work also has significantly impacted how the work market interacts with the different generations, although it might be evident. For the younger generations, the freedom that comes with remote or hybrid positions is priceless; it is so meaningful that they do not hesitate to resign from a position that does not consider this.

Older generations focus on other things; they tend to consider health benefits or vacations in their packages. They are less likely to quit a job because it does not fit their needs, but they have a more precise notion of what they want and are not afraid to raise their voices to change things up to an acceptable standard.?

More than rules, these are common patterns.

You don't have to feel bad if some of these facts do not apply to you. We have also found out that, although curious, it is not a rule that affects everyone. Industries also have a lot of weight when identifying patterns in their members. Healthcare, for example, and any emergency service, tend to register more resignations after the holiday season than before.

The busiest time of the year for IT is between March and May. Most technology people prefer to stay in a company for a full calendar year to finish any projects they may have. Switching positions mid-year can be pretty stressful as it means inserting yourself in an existing project rather than just starting fresh, which is very common in January.

Culture is also a pretty determining factor when it comes to outside influences over these numbers. Most developing countries tend to notice a slower pace when switching jobs rather than more stable economies. This is probably due to the economic uncertainty that is ever present in these countries. So there is not only a thing about your age, but it also has something to do with your environment overall.?
