European Commission (EC) Director-General visits India to discuss EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

In early July, Director-General of the European Commission Gerassimos Thomas visited India with a delegation of officials from the Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD) where they met with key stakeholders of the Indian industry and policymakers on the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to understand the challenges that Indian businesses face when implementing CBAM.


Climate resilient crops released by Prime Minister of India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified crop varieties, emphasizing their benefits for reducing costs and environmental impact. The varieties include cereals, millets, fruits, and vegetables, supporting sustainable and natural farming. These new varieties aim to boost productivity and income for farmers, even in adverse weather conditions.


Indo-German extension for task force on Hydrogen

Last month, India and Germany signed an extension of the Joint Declaration of Intent on the Indo-German Task Force on Hydrogen during a meeting between German Ambassador Dr. Philipp Ackermann and MNRE Secretary Bhupinder S. Bhalla. Originally signed in 2022, the agreement focuses on enhancing cooperation in green hydrogen production, utilization, storage, and distribution.

New economic survey estimates India's energy demand will double by 2047

India's Economic Survey for 2023-24 projects that the country's energy demand could increase by 2 to 2.5 times by 2047. The survey highlights that coal is expected to remain the primary source of energy for decades, with fossil fuels, which currently generate 70% of India's power, continuing to play a significant role in meeting this growing demand.


India’s green mobility goals face complex challenges

India's Economic Survey 2024 emphasises the country's commitment to green mobility and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It highlights the rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) sector, driven by government incentives and increased demand. Additionally, the expansion of renewable energy and the reduction of fossil fuel dependency are identified as critical to achieving sustainable mobility goals.


Ministry of Jal Shakti Presents Updated Data on Cleaning of Rivers in India in Parliament

The Ministry of Jal Shakti provided updated data on river cleaning efforts in India. Through the Namami Gange scheme and the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), the ministry has supported states and UTs in combating river pollution. As of July 2024, the NRCP covers 53 rivers across 98 towns in 17 states, with a sewage treatment capacity of 2,910.50 million liters per day.
