Your Future Self Has a Message for You

Every New Year, we focus on resolutions—on doing. But what if we paused to imagine who we want to be instead? That shift, I’ve found, can open doors to incredible possibilities.
The first coach training program I went through feels like eons ago, but I still remember a transformative exercise we did centered around our future selves. I even remember who I was paired with (we’re still friends today!) and some of the specifics she envisioned—family, the beach, a thriving business. Today, she has all those things. Not because the exercise made it happen, but because it made her crystal clear about what mattered most and what it looked and felt like to get there.
What I love about a future self exercise is that it’s not about what you’ll do—it’s about who you want to be. It invites you to think expansively, beyond the limits of “what’s realistic” or “what’s possible right now.”
Occasions like New Year’s give us a natural moment for this kind of reflection. They’re more than a flip of the calendar—they’re a psychological demarcation, a chance to move from what’s been to what could be. If things have been hard, this shift can bring renewed energy. If we’ve felt “off,” it offers a chance for realignment.
So why not take advantage of this moment? Imagine your future self. You might notice some self-imposed limits pop up—like “that could never happen”—but remind yourself that this is just an exercise. Anything is possible in an exercise. Years ago, my friend was single, working a corporate job, and living in Colorado. None of what she envisioned seemed within reach at the time, but here she is today, living that dream.
